Important Queries for Recreation Centers

Millions of people all over the nation enjoy public recreation centers and parks. This is because these facilities allow you to play sports, go canoeing, swim, and even hike. Depending on what activities you enjoy, you can choose a community park or recreation facility that meets your needs. Before deciding on an indoor or outdoor facility in your community, it is a good idea to make a few important inquiries.

  • Does the recreation center have a fitness department or gym?
If you would prefer to workout or enjoy a daily fitness regimen at the facility, then you should ask up front about a gym with workout equipment. After all, not every recreation center will offer this type of department. Many will focus more on sports and outdoor activities.

  • Are equestrian trails offered at the public park?
While some state parks will offer trails for horses and horseback riding, others will not. Therefore you must inquire about equestrian trails by phone. This way you will not bring your horse all the way to a public park that has no trails.

  • Are there fees or monthly passes that apply?
As you probably know, many recreation centers and community parks charge fees. This is how they are kept up and maintained. It is prudent to call the park and recreational services department in your area to inquire about fees and monthly or yearly passes before actually going to the center or park.

  • Does the recreation center provide a swimming pool?
Some community centers and public recreation facilities provide swimming pools and hot tubs. However, since many do not, you should ask about this ahead of time. You may also want to inquire about any rules and regulations that apply, as well as hours of operation.

Recreation centers are designed to serve the community in which they are located, but membership is generally open to anyone who wishes to join. Though fees vary by location, many offer youth and senior discounts, as well as family memberships. Membership will allow access to full use of the facility, including health equipment, gyms and often pools. Parks departments or the sponsoring organization, will provide information on whether additional classes or programs are covered with this fee, or if they are only available to the public at an additional cost.

Recreation centers are not the only places where community members can gain access to fitness equipment, classes and sports teams. More traditional, outdoor parks will often sponsor sports leagues and play areas that are suitable for children and adults alike. These sites also fall under the purview of the parks department, and are free to all, whether they are local, state or national parks. For an added fee, some even offer camping facilities and other opportunities to play, swim or take part in other fitness activities.

Private gyms are another alternative to recreation centers. These gyms are typically indoor fitness facilities, which may employ private trainers, maintain tennis or squash courts, or even offer swimming classes. Again, membership fees vary by area and gyms, but most are open to any member of the public who wishes to join. Often, these gyms will offer more special interest classes than a recreation center would, including dance, yoga and other trendy fitness options.

Recreation centers are designed to give members of the public, regardless of their means, access to fitness equipment and indoor and outdoor facilities.
