Written below are some questions you should keep in mind when speaking with a book publisher or publishing company.

  • What is involved with getting a novel edited and published?

Book publishers fall into three categories. Trade publishers sign authors and pay an advance and royalty to writers. Larger houses expect the author to have a literary agent, but smaller publishers will take direct submissions.

Vanity publishers charge the author for the privilege of being published. They then handle editing and printing. The poor reputation of vanity published books has to do with the fact that they will publish anyone willing to pay.

Self publishing services provide printing and sometimes distribution services to authors who are working independently. However, they generally do not offer editing or marketing services for the author.

Publishers hire editors, as well as artists to illustrate children's books and title pages. Authors do not work for the publisher, but are essentially independent freelance writers that release their work to be used and printed. They provide the manuscript, which is then edited, published and paid for. In the case of vanity and self publishers, writers are the clients.

Large publishing houses are generally split into various departments. Novels and non fiction books are generally kept separate. YA and children's books are also commonly their own department. Smaller publishers generally focus on one or two genres. E-publishers do not print books, but sell electronic books online. This is particularly common for romance and erotica publications.

Because of this, both writers and bookstores need to be aware of what a publisher sells. Some, for example, may sell sci-fi, fantasy and horror novels. Others may sell cookbooks. Biography and history books are also commonly printed. Larger publishers use printing presses. and smaller publishers may use print on demand services to print books as they are ordered. This, though, results in a higher unit price.

As the printing industry changes, it seems that anyone can be a publisher. However, not just anyone can be a good one.
