Questions to Ask Gardeners

If you are looking for someone to help you weed and water an existing garden, or even to help design a whole new garden, there is sure to be a gardener that can meet your needs. Here are some questions to ask.

  • What sort of experience do you have?
If you only need someone to cut the lawn and weed an existing flower or vegetable bed, it probably won’t matter whether that person has previous experience with garden construction. However, if you would like to design and construct a whole new garden for your home from scratch, ideally you would hire someone who has studied horticulture, such as a landscape architect. If you do hire a landscape architect, ask to see their certifications or registrations.

  • What type of pest control do you recommend?
Some types of trees and flowers are susceptible to specific pests. For example olive trees are susceptible to olive fruit flies. Other pests attack many kinds of plants, such as the Japanese beetle. If you aren’t comfortable using insecticides, there are also biological pest control methods available which include introducing beneficial insects to eat the pests you want to get rid of. Some botanical gardens use this method and a gardener who has studied horticulture will know what to recommend.

  • What kind of flowers or trees do you think will do well in my climate?
One important thing to keep in mind when planning a garden is the climate where your home is located. For example, most ferns require moist soil and lots of water. While a professionally-run botanical garden may have sufficient staff to tend plants that need special care, if you don’t have that time it may be better to stick with easier plants or experiment with growing more difficult plants in a container before planting in the ground.

There are many individuals who pursue a career in gardening or landscaping. This can be a very exciting line of work for the right individual. In fact, garden service workers generally deal with an array of landscaping tools, tree maintenance equipment, organic soil supplies, and even home association regulations. Different jobs call for different advising and consulting services. While you may work with some construction contractors in this field, you may also work with residential homeowners on a regular basis.

There is some landscaping training and gardening know-how involved with becoming a professional gardener or greenhouse worker. In fact, you may have to acquire a degree in horticulture or train under a garden service professional. This way, you can more easily address the needs of commercial business gardens, as well as residential house flower planting and maintenance work. You will need to have a good knowledge of plant food, roses, flower grower fertilizers, plant supplies, and tilling machinery in this line of work. On some days, you may have to assist homeowners with planting natural vegetables in organic soil, and on other days you may need to work on a Japanese themed botanical garden or planting herbs for a client.

Some maintenance tools you will need in this field are water hoses, mulching machines, shovels, and pruning clippers. There are a variety of seeds, flowers, and soils you will work with as well. A lot depends on where you work. It may be different if you work for a large landscaping company, rather than a small greenhouse service.
