Terms Used by Carpet and Rug Distributors
The following are some terms that your carpet or rug distributor may use.

Abrash: An abrash is a color variation on a rug. This variation can occur over time if the dyes fade at different rates. Abrash can also happen when a weaver reaches the end of one yarn batch and completes the rug with another batch.

Bleeding: Bleeding is when the color of a carpet or rug transfers into nearby material. This typically occurs because the dyed yarns were not thoroughly washed before the carpet or rug was assembled. Red is the color most affected by bleeding. Dyes that will not bleed are particularly important for flooring that will be used outdoor or may otherwise be exposed to liquid and sunlight.

Cartoon: A cartoon is a carpet or rug design, which a weaver uses to create the flooring. Cartoons are usually created on graph paper for quicker reference.

Field: A rug’s field is the portion of the mat that lies within the border. Distributors can obtain rugs with basically anything in the field, from an intricate landscape to a basic block of color.

Kilim: Kilim is a rug or carpet that lacks pile. To make these carpets and rugs, differently colored yarns are woven together to form patterns and images.

Pile: Pile is the surface of a rug or carpet that is raised above the textile foundation. Shag carpet is an example of a flooring material with significant pile.

Warp: The warp is the basis of woven textiles. It consists of the strands of yarn or other fibers that extend the length of the carpet or rug. The warp can be made of a variety of materials, from wool to silk. More durable materials can also be used for flooring intended for outdoor use.

Weft: The weft intersects with the warp. The weft is woven under and over the warp to create a rug, carpet, or other textile item.

Carpet and rug wholesalers and distributors sell flooring options to residential and commercial consumers. Brand name manufacturers often store the items in warehouses until they've been purchased. At that point, they're shipped to the shop or a customer's home. By keeping the items in warehouses, companies have control over their merchandise. They are used to help in the prevention of insect and water damage.

There are a number of methods used to create rugs and floor coverings. Some items are made by hand. Handmade rug making and weaving is used to create oriental rug styles. Knotting is used mostly in oriental and Persian styles. Every knot is hand tied in the correct color to create brilliant patterns. Knotted rugs are used to decorate living areas. For plusher coverings, try items made through the hooking method. To create hooked styles, strands of material are pulled through mesh backing using a special tool.

Manufacturers use a process to create the pile that is attached to protective backing. This process is how most wall-to-wall room coverings or bath mats are made. This process is cheap and makes the material easy to care for. Woven runners are used in locations where many people walk from one area to another, such as in a hotel, casino or business setting.

If the surface will see little foot traffic, choose a vibrant pattern. If it will get plenty of use, stick to durable items meant to withstand a lot of use. When you order your new carpet or mat from a shop or distributor, choose the style that best fits your needs.
