Questions to Ask About Bearings

There are several mechanical uses for bearings. If you have a need for a bearing, you will need to determine what type is necessary. Some bearings require pads. You may have to do some research to determine whether pads are necessary or any other materials. Here are a few questions to ask to get you started.

  • What kind of load do you need the bearing for?
There are two kinds of loads that you can use a bearing for, radial and thrust. A radial load is one in which the weight is applied perpendicular to the axis. A thrust load is one in which the weight is applied parallel to the axis.

  • How large is the load?
If the load is small, you may be able to use a ball bearing. These are also commonly referred to as wheel bearings. It is a sphere shape that can handle both radial and thrust loads. The load is transferred from the outer race to the ball to the inner race. Most ball bearings of made of steel. If you overload the ball it will deform and have adverse effects on its rotation. If your load is linear, you may still be able to use a wheel bearing. The term linear bearing refers more specifically to the load that it is being used for. Roller bearings have a cylinder shape and can handle larger loads.

  • Are you replacing the front wheel bearing on your car?
It is expected that after 30,000 miles you should replace the front wheel bearing on your car. If this is the case, you can get the necessary bearings from an auto supply store.

In many industrial and automotive settings, there are professionals who work directly with steel ball bearings. This is a major business these days, and often involves sealed bushings for skateboards, spherical ceramic bearings that roll inside mechanical parts, and tapered cylindrical materials that are built into vehicle engines. Men and women work with all sorts of steel rails, wheel bearings, and mechanical aviation materials daily in this industry to earn a living. Since manufacturers and distributors are located all across the United States, there are a number of employment positions involving ball bearings.

Whether or not you need a college degree for working with materials like ball bearings really just depends on the field you enter. If you are a major buyer for an automotive plant, then you may need a degree in business. If you sell bearings at cheap rates to motor vehicle companies, you may only need a smaller amount of training. A lot depends on what your job title calls for. Experts who work with sealed bushings for aviation equipment may need an engineering degree before getting hired in this field. Some needle point-sized materials and rolling bearings call for years of precise training and experience.

Those who work with bearings for motor vehicles, skateboards and other mechanical purposes will usually work with an array of engineers, mechanics and industrial professionals in this field. A lot really just depends on the company you are employed with and what type of materials they deal with on a daily basis.
