Collecting antiques often requires some knowledge about the appraised value of vintage objects, as well as the authenticity.   • How rare is the antique or vintage item?

    If you find you have a real eye for antiques, you may consider becoming a dealer. You'll work directly with stores and auction houses to collect high quality and rare pieces for sale. You'll appraise vintage items like furniture, clothing, and jewelry for various shops.

    There's no actual education requirement to become and antique dealer. You must understand antiques and market values though, so courses are available through various colleges to help you understand these better. You may also take courses from technical institutes that specialize in this field. Many courses on how-to appraise are available online.

    Probably the most important skill you can have as a dealer is the art of customer service. You will need to make and keep contacts with industry professionals as well as entice customers with your abilities. You will need to be on tops of collecting trends (i.e. glass top tables, emerald rings, cuckoo clocks, etc.), what's hot at the moment, and know where to get the piece for a decent price. If maps, toy dolls, and guns are popular at auction, they'll often fetch higher prices for the house that's selling them. If your customer is looking for glass lamp-work, books by Charles Dickens, or 19th century pottery, then you should be able to advise them accordingly. Furniture (i.e. chairs, desks, mirrors, tables, etc.) are almost always popular and you should be able to "schmooze" your way into getting your customer the best deal.
