Tips for Dining at an American Restaurant
The following are some tips for dining at an American restaurant:

Tip #1: Research Your Options
American restaurants offer a wide variety of menu options at very different prices. You could opt for an expensive steakhouse or seafood restaurant when celebrating a special occasion. A casual diner could visit a burger joint or a buffet. Researching an American restaurant will allow you to determine the cuisine that is available and how much you should expect to pay for your meal. It’s always nice to inspect appetizer, dessert, and drink options, too.

Tip #2: Plan Ahead
Plan ahead to ensure your night out is a pleasant one. Excluding bars, most eating venues will not turn away small children, but some locations will most definitely frown on loud babies or kids. If your goal is a romantic evening out, hire a reliable babysitter in advance. Many American restaurants will accept reservations. If you plan on catching a movie after dinner, make your reservations at least a few days beforehand to ensure you can get in at an appropriate time. If reservations are unavailable, allow ample time to wait for a table. Wait times can easily range from 20 to 60 minutes during peak hours. Calling ahead to inform a restaurant of a larger party – typically more than five or six people – is always the polite thing to do, even if that restaurant does not accept reservations.

Tip #3: Follow Restaurant Etiquette
Some American restaurant etiquette is basic: don’t talk with your mouth full, be polite when addressing restaurant staff, and wait for your entire party to be served before beginning to eat. Other policies for American restaurants may be different, though. Many restaurants do not allow smoking in certain areas, or at all. Tipping is customary, especially when it comes to bartenders, waiters, and waitresses. Tips should be based on the quality of service. The rule of thumb is to tip 10% to 20% of your total bill, usually before taxes and discounts are factored in. Larger parties may have gratuity automatically added to the bill.

When trying to decide what type of American restaurant you would like to eat at, consult the yellow pages or the internet for examples of menus. Search for your favorite American foods, such as burgers, steak, and wings, and take note of the various restaurants specializing in each. It's always nice to go to a close location, but if the restaurant of your choice is farther away, call to see if they do delivery. Take out is another popular option restaurants offer. Fast food places allow you to drive along side the restaurant and order and be served from the comfort of your car. Another fantastic source for information is the yellow pages; there, you will find lists of places that serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Brunch is a meal between breakfast and lunch, and is available at many places, and often in buffets. A buffet is comprised of several dishes being served in an open area for patrons to select from, as opposed to a written menu. Fine dining is an option if you're looking for some quality cuisine. There are many gourmet seafood restaurants and fancy steakhouses available- great places for romantic evenings out. If you're simply trying to fill the rumbling void, hit up a local pizza place, fast food drive-through, or neighborhood bar. Bar food consists of American staples, including burgers, pizza, and buffalo chicken wings. Not much research is necessary when trying to locate your lower end dining establishments, but a bit of time should be put in to finding a gourmet place, as you will be dropping more money there. If visiting the South, especially New Orleans, take the time to try traditional soul food and Creole cooking. They are great examples of the blending of cultures, which have evolved into uniquely American cuisine.
