Questions to Ask a Trucking and Heavy Hauling Company
p> For heavy hauling trucking needs it is best to hire a professional service to ensure your load is transported safely, legally and on time. Equipment that typically requires specialized hauling includes tractors, mobile homes, wind energy merchandise and other bulky objects. Hauling companies own and operate specialized transportation such as trailers, flatbeds and more. Here are some questions to ask if you are hiring a trucking heavy hauling company.

  • What types of trailers or trucks do you have available for my hauling needs?
Most hauling companies have a fleet of trucks including flatbeds, trailers, rigs and more. The company will assess your cargo and determine the safest and most efficient vehicle to move it with.

  • Will my freight require an escort?
Certain heavy loads that are of an awkward shape or very large size will require an additional smaller truck to drive behind the load as an escort with flags and warnings to other drivers. If you require an escort truck the heavy hauling company you hire should provide one.

  • Do you offer courier or express services?
Express services offer the fastest possible delivery of a particular heavy haul while courier services are more regular deliveries of smaller things like payroll, money or packages. It can be convenient to hire one company for all your delivery needs.

  • Will my cargo be insured while it is being transported?
Each trucking company in the industry will have a different insurance policy but in many situations their insurance will only cover their drivers and own equipment and just a small amount of what is being transported. It is a good idea to obtain insurance to cover any damage that might be caused to your freight during transit.

Transporting and hauling heavy equipment can be dangerous. That is why all drivers hauling hazardous materials and heavy loads are required to obtain a commercial driver’s license. This is common for drivers who transport bulk merchandise. Drivers are also expected to maintain a clean driving record. Depending on the trucking company, there may be strict qualification standards.

There is generally little tolerance for charges of driving under the influence for truck and flatbed drivers. Since trucking is an around the clock industry, falling asleep at the wheel is one of the most prominent dangers involved. With the size and the weight of the cargo and equipment, a driver who falls asleep can do some serious damage to other drivers on the road.

As a carrier of heavy freight, it is the driver’s duty and responsibility to pull over if they are not able to remain alert. They may try to avoid this if dispatch is expecting them to arrive to the destination or the warehouse by a certain time. Driving a flatbed or a loaded trailer generally requires a lot of hours and out of state driving.

Depending on the freight that is being hauled, a driver may be out of town for several days or weeks at a time. If it is an express or courier service company, the hours may vary. That is why a trucker may decide to go into management and run their own brokerage. They then run the logistics of the operation from the office without having to travel. Sitting from the comfort of an office is more desirable than motoring down the highway days and weeks at a time without break.
