Questions to Ask about Radiator Repair

If your car is overheating, it may be possible that you have a problem with your radiator. A mechanic can repair a radiator problem, or replace a broken radiator. To ensure quality service, there are a few questions you should consider asking your radiator sales business before you hire them to fix your car.

  • What parts will need to be repaired or replaced?
Your mechanic should be able to tell you what parts of your car will need replacing or repair. If your hose is leaking, your fan is broken, or your water pump is not working, a skilled mechanic should be able to tell you why your car is overheating.

  • Can you use a rental car while your car is repaired?
If the shop needs to order parts, like a new radiator, hose, or fan, it may take a few days. Depending on how long it is going to take to repair your vehicle, you may need a rental car to get around. Some shops will give you a rental car or offer you a discount while your car is repaired.

  • Does the business offer any guarantees?
If a business that deals with auto parts sales and repairs does not offer guarantees it is probably a good idea to use a different service that is willing to stand behind its work.

  • How much will it cost?
You will want to know how much it will cost to fix your car, so you can make sure the repairs are within your budget. Ask for a full estimate in writing before work is begun.

Most automotive radiators are sold by mechanics and repair shops. Repair and replacement of radiators is a somewhat specialist field. Few car owners have the capability to install a radiator themselves, so most sales are through repair shops.

Radiator repair shops often also repair and replace heaters and air conditioning systems. Replacement may involve replacing fans and leaky hoses. Shops may also sell hoses and other parts and supplies to other mechanics or to owners who try to do their own work. Sales of fans are important.

Both new and used radiators may be sold, with aftermarket sales important. Car and truck radiators are, however, most likely to be replaced new. Used systems can give a significant discount. Most modern radiators are made of aluminum. Radiator replacement may also be part of an overall attempt to improve the performance of a vehicle.

Shops hire mechanics who are trained in installing new radiators and also retail salesmen. Wholesalers also hire salesmen. Mechanics generally take specialist automotive courses, including a course in radiators specifically.

Home radiator systems are for heating rather than cooling. Traditional radiators are filled with water or steam. Oil-filled systems are also used. These home systems are somewhat less popular now with convection heaters and electric systems having taken over much of the role. However, repairing radiators is still important, with the systems in place in many older homes in cold climates. Most radiators are valve controlled, and the valves may need to be replaced. Radiator technicians may also be qualified to work on air conditioning and more modern heating systems.

Automotive radiators will remain important, as even hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles require this source of cooling.
