    Massage therapy can be a wonderful occupation to perform, especially if you enjoy helping people relax and improve their overall health. In order to become a therapist, you must take classes to be trained properly and take the time that's necessary to become fully certified, though this can vary from state to state.

    Out of the 50 states, 37 have massage licensing laws that require minimum physical contact hours before you can work at a parlor or spa. These minimums can range from 330 to 1,000 hours and can take up to two years to complete. You can go above and beyond the regular school requirements to learn specialized muscle techniques such as Thai, other Asian techniques, Swedish and pregnancy services by either taking classes from a master or going to a school that teaches these techniques. Most schools teach standard methods like foot, back, and full body massage while you may have to search for a school that teaches deep tissue therapeutic techniques.

    Once properly licensed, you can decide to either open your own parlor, join an already working spa, or try to get into sports therapy. If you decide to open your own place, you must learn the basics of business management and buy your own equipment such as tables, oil, and stones. Running your own business can be a pain, but you'll be able to choose your own hours and clients to help with stress relief. Advertising should be aimed towards strengthening well being and physical techniques in order to get the right foot traffic.
