Questions to Ask A Vet

If you are bringing your pet to a vet clinic or animal hospital for the first time, you may have a lot of questions. If your dog, cat or other pet is having health issues, it can be a very scary time. Don't be shy about asking questions to the vet and the clinic's staff.

  • What vaccines does my bird need?

This is a normal question to have if you are a new bird owner. Getting the correct animal vaccinations upfront will keep your animal healthy in the long-run.

  • What kinds of insurance do you take? Do I need a referral?

When looking for a specialist to care for your horse or other exotic animal always ask about insurance upfront to avoid large bills later on.

  • I am new to town, where is the nearest 24 hour hospital?

During a standard vet visit ask about urgent hospital care so you know what to do if an emergency should take place. There are some vets who use this type of treatment.

  • Do you have an emergency phone number?

If your pet is suffering from a serious illness, some doctors will give out a private number.

  • Do you have any experience with the practice of holistic medicine?

If you believe in holistic medicine when possible for yourself, it is normal to want it for your pet as well.

  • How long will it take my pet to recover from this surgery?

It is always good to know this upfront for a scheduled surgery so that you can make arrangements to take time off of work or buy special supplies for your animal.

"Dr. Gotcher is the epitome of a great veterinarian. His attention to detail, diligence, & desiring the best treatment for our pet over the past six or so years has merited our confidence and trust in him and his staff. Unlike other vets, he demonstrated his primary concern and goal was for the welfare of our dog. He was extremely compassionate toward our family and our beloved Dudley during his ..."

"My yellow lab began vomiting and acting listless around 6pm on a Saturday. After a few hours of this I decided I could not wait, and took him to this clinic. Very nice clinic, with nice, professional staff. The initial visit was $105.00. I quickly realized this was just an admitting fee. I was shortly presented a series of estimates by the vet for further care. The least of which was over 400.00 a ..."
