Helpful Sheet Metal Terms
When dealing with sheet metal, it is helpful to understand the terminology found below:

Decambering: This is a metalworking process that involves removing a horizontal bend or camber from strip-shaped metal materials. This process is similar to leveling or flattening sheet metal, but also results in deforming the edge of the material.

Drip Edge: Often seen on sheet metal, this is formed on the lower edge of a counter-flashing, gravel stop, or drain bar. This edge is typically 30 to 60 degrees, and is formed to prevent water from running or dripping off.

Galvanizing: This is the process of applying a zinc coating to sheet metal, steel or other alloys. The coating is applied through electrodeposition or a hot-dripping method. The purpose of this process is to make sheet metal or steel more corrosion resistant.

Lap Joint: This refers to a seam that is found at the end of a sheet metal product. It is created when one to three inches of sheet metal is placed over another section of material. This eliminates the need for splice plates.

Anodizing: A finishing process that involves aluminum materials. An electrolytic oxidation method is used to create a thin layer of aluminum oxide on aluminum. This is intended to be an extremely hard and durable protective coating. Anodized aluminum can be colored or clear.

Deep Drawing: This is a metal forming process. A forming die is used on a sheet metal blank, and the shape of the metal is transformed. Since the material is radially drawn into the forming die beyond its own diameter, it is called deep drawing.

Sheet metal basically refers to any kind of metallic material shaped or cut into a thin, flat form. After you have purchased a piece or length of sheet metal, you might install it in that original form, or it might require shaping into new dimensions and shapes.

  • In what form is sheet metal available to be purchased?
Sheet metal can be purchased in its basic form of a flat pane. Alternately, this material is also sold in a strip, as can allow it to be more easily stored or transported. The piece of equipment required to create a coiled strip of sheet metal is referred to as a roll slitter.

  • What does the gauge of sheet metal indicate, and how is it used?
While sheet metal is generally quite flat, its degree of thickness can vary. Gauges indicate the size of sheet metal, increasing in relation to the thinness of the particular sheet. Contractors putting in sheet metal should inform you where its gauge falls, in a general 8-30 range.

  • What are the grades of sheet metal and what do these indicate?
Grades refer specifically to stainless steel. In general, contractors offer three different grades of this kind of metal, including 304, 316 and 410.

  • Which kinds of materials are offered in sheet metal form?
Shaping sheet metal into different forms can allow for its placement in different applications, ranging from roofs and gutters used in buildings to smaller objects. In addition to the metal already mentioned, brass, tin, and nickel could be selected, such as for roofs or gutters.
