Questions about Getting a Passport

If you are looking to travel internationally, you will need a passport. One item that often confuses people when they submit their passport application is the requirement for a photo. You must submit a photo, whether this is your first passport or a renewal. Passport photos, as well as visa and green cards for that matter, all have strict requirements on what is acceptable. You can use a professional photo editor to take your passport photo or you can do it at home. Before you get a passport, read over these commonly asked questions.

  • What do I need in the picture?
To submit a photo along with the application form, you need a color picture of your face. This means a picture of you, alone, from the chest up. You will also need to be standing in front of a white background and looking directly into the camera.

  • Can I wear glasses?
Only if you wear them on a daily basis. The same goes for hearing aids. However, you cannot wear sunglasses or any other dark shades that block your eyes. Likewise, if your glasses glare while the picture is taken and hide the color of your eyes, your application will be refused.

  • Can I use a software photo editor?
You can use photo editing programs to trim the photo down to the necessary size, but you cannot use them to digitally enhance or alter your appearance. Doing so will lead to your photo being rejected.

  • How do I submit the photo?
If you are applying for a passport or visa by mail, the photo can be attached to the form. Often if you are renewing your passport you are allowed to apply via mail. However, if you are applying in person, as most first-time applicants must, do not attach the photo to the form.

Whether a tourist wants to apply for a visa for international travel or for immigration to a coumntry, there are specific requirements a passport or visa photo must meet to be approved. There are applications for a new visa, passport book, passport card, green card or in some cases, a renewal.

The size of the submitted picture must be 2 inches by 2 inches, printed in color and sized so the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. The photo should be taken in front of a white background. Officials regulate the composition of visa and passport photos to make it easy to identify the person pictured.

The clothing worn in the picture should reflect the subject's everyday appearance. Avoid hats, sunglasses or even glare from prescription glasses that might obscure the person in the photo. It's also important for the subject to fully face the camera, maintain a natural expression and completely open their eyes. This is especially important to remember when taking pictures of a child for a passport or visa application.

Do not staple your photo to the application form. To expedite the application process it is critical that every instruction is followed. Carefully review the application form before submitting, along with the application fee, and ensure all of the instructions have been followed to the letter. Contact the appropriate agency or office with any questions.

Find an online photo editor that can help you size and submit the digital photo yourself. An online editor is useful for photos for renewals and new passports. The site also provides a detailed description of the photo requirements for visas and passports.
