Questions to Ask Your Meat or Seafood Wholesaler
Wholesalers purchase large quantities of beef, pork, poultry, mutton or seafood from farmers and fishermen, butcher and package it, and then market it to retailers including restaurants and supermarkets. Below are several important questions to ensure you're getting the most from your wholesaler.

  • How often is the facility inspected?
The Meat Inspection Act ensures food safety in the United States by requiring annual inspection of meatpacking facilities to guarantee they meet cleanliness and safety standards.

  • What cuts of meat or varieties of seafood are available?
Typically, butchers make dozens of cuts of beef, pork, poultry or mutton available. Depending on your needs, you can select from several kinds of steaks, including T-bones, strip steaks and tenderloins. You can even order ribs, sirloins, tenderloins, and roasts. Shoulders and briskets are also available. Seafood wholesalers process and market fresh, frozen and live varieties of fish, including shellfish such as scallops, shrimp and crab.

  • Is there a minimum order required?
Because wholesalers are used to dealing in large quantities of meat, many require a minimum dollar amount or weight to process an order.

  • What forms of payment are acceptable?
Some wholesalers only accept cash while others accept credit. Some may credit farmers with a dollar amount based on the value of the animals they drop off, which can be used against the balance of a bill.

  • Will the price of my product vary throughout the year?
Some varieties of meat or seafood, such as wild salmon from the west coast of the United States, may have limited availability in the winter months, driving prices up.

  • How soon will my meat or seafood be available after I place my order?
Some facilities require 24 hours advance notice, while others set a cutoff time, such as 10 p.m. the night before delivery or collection.

  • Is the meat delivered or must the client collect it?
Companies may or may not offer delivery service.
  • National Meat Association
For everyone from restaurants to grocers and more, our association provides the perfect place to find wholesale meat providers to suit your business needs. Our members provide the freshest and healthiest products.

Meat wholesalers sell in bulk, therefore they can sell in packs, which saves the customer money overall. They are found in wholesale clubs, but also online. Buy meat in bulk from websites dedicated to selling the best cuts of gourmet steaks, for example, and stock up on your next big cookout.

Buying from a virtual butcher in bulk can be convenient for shoppers who don’t have the time to go to an actual store or warehouse. These sites may categorize offerings by marinated meats, wings, meatballs, hamburger patties, and fresh seafood. They may even sell game meats, such as venison, buffalo chicken, and ostrich.

Discount product wholesaler categories may be listed by unit price, by popular items, or specials and promotions. They typically sell ribs, sausage, ham, and poultry by the box, package, or case. Restaurant owners and butchers frequent fish and meat wholesalers for their fresh bulk options, such as shrimp, salmon, pork, and beef.

Meat wholesale markets may also sell the condiments and related foods that go with meats and seafood, such as deli cheese, gourmet mustards, marinades, and specialty sauces. The meat wholesale industry employs many professionals, from meat packers to delivery workers to butchers.

Some wholesale suppliers and distributors are locally owned and sell a limited selection of local frozen and fresh fillet lamb prime, scallops, ham, or poultry. Others operate on a national basis, and have a far-reaching selection of organic beef, pork, steak, and fish. When visiting a meat wholesale market, remember to call ahead or even reserve your order online, especially if you have a large specialty request.
