Questions to Ask Drilling Companies

For land and offshore drilling needs, it is best to hire a well-established, experienced and reputable company. Most drilling companies manage all parts of the drilling process as well as employ professionally trained employees to operate the rigs. These companies can drill for petroleum, gas, oil and more. Here are some questions to ask a drilling company that you are considering hiring.

  • What are your company’s drilling capabilities?
Drilling companies come in all different shapes and sizes and can accommodate projects from personal home use water wells to oil projects. For large scale natural gas projects some companies can handle both land and offshore drilling. Check that the company you hire is experienced and prepared to handle your total needs from preparation, equipment operation to drilling and sending crude products to a refinery if needed.

  • What machines and rigs does your company have for drilling projects?
The drilling service you hire should have a variety of machines and equipment to complete your project efficiently and safely. One of the most crucial machines is a drilling rig which is used to create boreholes in the ground. A variety of drill types are used for projects including rotary, directional, horizontal and more. Equipment such as barges that can accommodate drills are necessary for offshore projects. After describing your project to a drilling company they will tell you the equipment they will use to start and finish your job.

  • What is your company’s policy on safety?
Working with products such as petroleum, oil and gas as well as large machinery can be dangerous not just to operators but also to the public, wildlife and environment if managed incorrectly. The company you hire should have safe, well-maintained equipment, trained professionals and a safety mission dedicated to responsibility and accountability.

Every drilling company makes money by constructing an oil well to bore through the earth's surface. The company can thereby find and obtain valuable petroleum oil. During the process, some natural gas is usually also obtained.

The oil drilling industry is incredibly lucrative, and company executives are able to make astonishing profits each year.

Some oil drilling companies are located offshore. These companies construct large platform rigs over the water they hope to find oil in. The construction process on these barges is lengthy, and requires a great deal of precision equipment. Once the offshore rigs have been completed, the company then begins to pump the petroleum oil up from the fluid column to the platform. It can then be sent to a refinery.

Other oil drilling companies are located on land. In the United States, most unused oil reservoirs are located in Alaska, and so a large amount of drilling takes place there. Oil companies take the time to explore each potential drilling site or field. Then, if they decide that they'll be able to obtain significant quantities of oil or gas from the site, they begin to lay down a network of pipes. These pipes, which the companies construct with highly specialized tools and machines, can transport oil great distances.

Drilling is a complicated process, and a variety of methods are often used to extract the oil. Horizontal, or directional wells, can be used, for instance, on land in lieu of more traditional wells. Rotary drilling is also often used to maximize profits.
