Important Questions for Drafting Services

Drafting services play a large role in the planning and creation of any architectural design. Architects use these services to help demonstrate floor plans to their clients, or to create a drawing that is to scale for the contractors to follow. If you are considering employing drafting services, the questions below will assist you.

  • What tools do you use when rendering your drawings? Are they scaled?
Many drafting engineers use a mixture of hand-held mechanical tools, and advanced CAD software when creating floor plans. With the aid of DWG programing, they can render 2-D and 3-D drawings of buildings for clients, contractors, and architects alike. If you are going to need a copy of these drawings on your computer, you will need to invest in DWG technology to allow your computer to host them.

  • What types of projects have you previously worked on?
When you are choosing an architect and drafting service to work with, you will want to find a team that has experience working on the type of project you are presenting. If the architectural firm typically works on commercial buildings, you may not want to hire them to draw houses for you. Find a firm that not only has experience with the work you need, but reasonable pricing for laying out house plans.

  • Are you a trained drafter and architect, or do work with a drafting engineer?
Though many architects are trained in using mechanical tools to render a floor plan, they may not be able to render complex 3 dimensional plans. They may have to outsource this task to another company. Since this can affect the expediency of your project, you may want to consider a person that is capable of both.

Draughtsmen may work independently or for various firms. For example, an architecture firm may hire somebody to draw full time. With growing automation, of course, fewer hours are spent actually drawing. CAD software may sometimes allow an engineer to do their own designs and CAM pushes the automation a step further. Images are rarely created on paper. More often, they are drawn on a tablet and stored on a computer as DWG files. These DWG files may be 2-D or 3-D, depending on the specific needs and requirements of the client.

Architecture is one of the larger needs. Construction companies, for example, may commission two or three house designs that can be re-used in a development. Custom houses, on the other hand, are put together by architects. It is the job of the draughtsman to turn the design idea into a usable plan. They may be asked to draw single floors or entire buildings. Often, they have to draw plans for conversions. Architects may also be hired to renovate a building.

Mechanical drafting requires great attention to detail. CAM is sometimes used, requiring particularly accurate plans. Civil engineers also hire draughtsmen. Both of these are specialists, with mechanical drafters requiring some engineering knowledge and the ability to visualize how various parts fit together. They may also benefit from a knowledge of the properties of materials ranging from wood to steel. All drafting work has to be highly accurate. Technical drawings may also be created for promotional purposes.

Drafting services firms may also offer project management. They may provide floor plans to a variety of clients in a variety of situations. It is fairly common to outsource CAD work, especially offshore to companies like India. Because of this, job opportunities in the United States are lower than they could be.
