Tips on Buying Pets and Pet Supplies
Pets give their human companions love and joy for many years. Show them that you care in return by following these tips to help buy pet supplies.

Tip #1: The cost of pet supplies depends on the pet.
Pets require a lifetime of care. That tiny Great Dane puppy with gigantic feet in the store may look small now, but it could weigh more than 100 pounds when full grown. Because of its large size, it needs more food than a small kitten that will grow into a 15 pound cat, so you must consider this lifetime cost when buying the pet. Exotic pets, such as fish, often have high start-up costs because you have to purchase their entire living environment, including an aquarium, decorations, and water treatments. However, in the long run the cost of keeping fish is less expensive than keeping dogs and cats because their food is cheaper.

Tip #2: Get training supplies for young pets.
It's never too early to purchase training supplies, especially for young puppies that grow into large dogs. An eight week old puppy will follow you everywhere, but go ahead and buy a leash. Letting a puppy get used to the leash when it is young makes obedience training easier in the long run. The same is true with grooming supplies. Let the puppy get used to bathing and handling when it is still easy to manage, and you won't have to worry about trying to bathe a panicking older dog.

Tip #3: Exotic pets need extra care.
Considering buying an exotic pet, such as a bird or reptile? They have specialized needs different from cats and dogs. Research the particular needs of each exotic species and make sure you can afford to take care of them.

Anyone working within the pet supplies industry should love working with all kinds of animals. These professionals may range from sales associates to veterinarians to adoption agency specialists. Those looking to adopt a dog, cat, rabbit, or bird can head to an animal shelter. Specialists there can help guide you in the right direction in terms of choosing the right pet for your family. They can also sell you necessary supplies, such as food, collars, crates, toys, and leashes.

Retail pet stores sell the widest range of pet supplies for any animal, even supplies for exotic animals. Associates can direct customers to the sale items, most popular items, or closeout bargains. They can outfit dogs and cats with clothes, help select the most nutritious pet food, and even help choose the proper size cage or new toy for that feisty new puppy.

Specialty stores, such as those that specialize in aquariums of all sizes for fresh and salt water fish, can work with the customer one-on-one to come up with just the right size tank, food, and even tropical fish to stock the tank with. They have expert knowledge of fish and the environment they need to thrive in. This can range from making sure the water is the right temperature, to giving advice on how to care for the fish tank.

The pet supplies industry overall offers many different services, including regular sales, bulk discount from wholesalers, free shipping and delivery, and gift wrapping. Online pet stores offer online catalogs, order tracking, and virtual assistance. Online pet supplies stores may offer free shipping when the consumer spends a certain amount on anything from beds and carriers to grooming products and shampoo treatments. From small birds to large reptiles, pet supplies stores have you covered.
