Questions to Ask a Health Club

Joining a health club is a common option for people trying to become more fit and lose weight. But if you're not careful, you could also end up losing a lot of time and money. So before you sign the gym's contract, there are some important questions you should have in mind.

  • What are my exercise goals?
Gyms vary in the kinds of athletic equipment and exercise rooms available. In addition to the standard items like treadmills and free weights, some places include areas to play sports like basketball. The larger, pricier health clubs may even include a swimming pool. But if you don't intend to use these types of athletic and fitness equipment, you will in effect be paying extra money for nothing. Having a precise conditioning goal in mind will help you find the right gym.

  • What are the payment options?
Some health clubs offer yearly contracts to their members, while others allow month-by-month plans. While you may get a discount if you pay for a whole year at once, many people who take this option end up losing money when they soon afterward decide to stop attending the gym. You should also ask about the gym's cancellation policy. Some clubs automatically renew memberships if you don't explicitly cancel the contract.

  • Does the contract have any restrictions?
If you're joining a gym that belongs to a larger chain of franchises, be advised that you may be allowed to train only at that location. You may have to pay extra if you want to be able to attend other clubs. You should also ask if the exercise classes offered, such as Pilates and yoga, are included in the membership plan or will require additional fees. Use of the sporting facilities, such as basketball courts, may not be included in the standard contract.
  • International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Assn.

Health clubs often hire personal trainers, assistants, class instructors and athletic experts to help their members improve their physical health safely. The specific job positions at a gym, however, will depend on what types of services they offer. For instance, a gym with a pool is likely to hire a lifeguard as well as a swimming instructor. However those jobs are obviously unnecessary at a health club that doesn’t have a pool.

Personal trainers often have backgrounds in physical education. They should know how to use the free weights and athletic equipment in the gym to help each member reach their health goals. Since members will have a variety of goals in mind, the trainers should know how to use aerobic and cardio training equipment, as well as how to lift free weights and use exercise equipment. They might also need to know how to help their students avoid physical injury through spa therapy options.

Since many gyms have fitness classes, they need instructors who can teach pilates, aerobics yoga and other popular exercise styles. Fitness disciplines such as yoga and pilates often have training programs that teach instructors how to conduct classes that improve a physical condition without causing injury.

Some health clubs have intramural sports teams that give their members the opportunity to have fun during their workouts. These sports teams might need coaches and referees. The coaches might volunteer for their positions, or the gym might pay them for their services. Regardless, they should understand the rules of the game and provide support to their players when necessary.
