Gas Cylinder Common Terms
Pressurized gas cylinders are used for storing hundreds of different materials with hundreds of different industrial applications. Also known as pressure vessels or bottles, the most common uses for gas cylinders are oxygen tanks, fire extinguishers, hand torches and scuba breathing cylinders. Although they are commonly referred to as tanks, gas cylinders store gasses at a pressure above ambient pressure and have a stop angle valve at the top, whereas tanks usually store liquids at ambient pressure, and feature open tops. Here is a list of common components associated with gas cylinders:

Propane: A versatile hydrocarbon gas that is typically compressed into liquid form. It is used as a fuel source for central heating, barbeques, torches, kilns and portable stoves. It is also used in hot air balloons and as the propellant in paintball guns.

Helium: An odorless, colorless, inert and non-toxic gas used in cryogenic applications, as a shielding gas for arc welding weak or contaminated materials, for leak detection in high pressure containers and high-vacuum equipment, and airship flight.

Acetylene: A highly flammable and unstable gas used for oxy-fuel welding and cutting.

Argon: An odorless, colorless and non toxic noble gas. It is used in gas metal arc welding, as a poultry asphyxiant, as an oxygen displacing preservative and as a type of fire extinguisher.

Co2: The chemical formula for carbon dioxide, a heavy and odorless greenhouse gas. It is a leavening agent in foods when yeast produces carbon dioxide from fermenting sugars in bread dough, and also in carbonated beverages.

Many laws and regulations exist regarding the use and sale of industrial and medical gas cylinders. Before a company can supply their products to consumers, the items must undergo various safety tests. Rules and testing procedures vary for fuel, oil, petroleum, butane, propane and other forms of gas pumps and equipment. In addition, important information must be printed on cylinders before they can be shipped to consumers. This usually includes details regarding the working or service pressure, manufacture date and contents of the cylinder, along with other required information.

For safety purposes, many medical cylinders, industrial propane tanks and other devices are required to contain a special metal between the valve regulator and the cylinder. The metal is designed to melt at a certain temperature to help a bottle or tank slowly release its contents in order to avoid an explosion. Tanks and bottles are also usually color coded. Colors indicate what gases are contained in the cylinder and what their intended use is for. However, color coding has not been standardized among all states and are therefore not always a reliable indicator.

In addition to offering discounts and cheaper prices than more general industrial suppliers, bulk suppliers of gas cylinders will typically provide detailed safety information regarding their products. Also, there are many companies that offer general information on the practical uses for the bulk items they carry. Whether you need gas cylinders for personal, professional or industrial use, distributors and manufacturers are committed to offering safe and reliable products for consumers throughout the United States.
