Important Terms to Know About Tents
Tents are essential shelters made from various fabrics or materials, which are then draped over support frames to form a barrier between occupants and the outdoor elements. There are many types of tents, not just those for use in camping, but also for those used in festivals, a circus, weddings and other outdoor events. You can purchase tents from retailers in stores or online. Plus, you can purchase all the necessary components that go with the tent, such as flexible poles, rigid, poles, flysheets and groundsheets. Here are some important terms to know when it comes to retail tents:

Rain Fly: A canvas flap on a tent that you can draw back to allow entrance or exit. It keeps out rain and other elements.

Flysheet: A piece of fabric, usually nylon or canvas, that you can pitch over a tent to keep out bad weather such as downpours.

Tent Peg: A spike with a hook at one end, usually made of metal, that you can push into the ground to keep a tent pitched. This can be done via ropes attached to the tent, or directly to the tent material itself. Pegs usually are included in the purchase a tent kit, along with the proper tools.

Anchor: Bags or slings you can fill with heavy rocks or sand to keep your tent grounded in place.

A-frame: The most basic of tent configurations, where the cross section looks like the letter A.

Baffle: Fabric panels within the shell of a sleeping bag to keep insulation in place.

Retail stores that have tents for sale need employees that can give customers the information that they need to make smart choices when buying canvas shelters. The sales and service reps working for the retail stores should have some basic knowledge about the types of tents that are used for family camping trips, large festivals, and car shelters. Big retail stores that sell a wide range of products might not be able to offer as much detailed information about canvas domes, pop ups, and backpacking tents as stores that focus on outdoor camping equipment.

Sales managers that work for outdoor equipment retailers often have more information than sales representatives. The managers have more responsibility within the company, so they should be able to help customers choose between canopy, pop up, and family dome tents.

Some managers that work for the stores spend their time building relationships with manufacturers and wholesalers. This allows them to purchase seasonal canvas tents, plastic walls, and other types of shelters at the lowest possible price. They can then sell or rent the supplies to price-conscious consumers that want the right tent for their events but also want to save money when they buy large shelters.

If the company offers shipping and delivery services, then they need warehouse workers that can keep all of the products organized. This helps the company send purchases to the right person. Warehouse workers also need to be strong enough to carry heavy objects. Depending on the warehouse, they might also need training to operate heavy machinery.
