Questions to Ask about Coin Dealer Supplies

Coin collecting is a hobby that attracts many people all over the world. Some have dreams of selling that album full of rare old currency that they found in the attic, while others find considerable value and happiness in collecting antique or commemorative coins, storing them in lovingly kept books. In any case, there are some considerations you should keep in mind before you buy supplies from a coin dealer.

  • Are you a member of the Professional Numismatists Guild?
It isn't necessary for coin dealers and suppliers to belong to the PNG, but its members usually adhere to the highest standards of professionalism in the field. Among other requirements, members must have at least five years of experience and agree to follow the Collector Bill of Rights. The Guild lists its members on its website.

  • How should I clean my coins?
You should avoid cleaning coins, especially rare ones, without expert guidance. Improper cleaning of coins can damage them and reduce their sale value. If you want to have your antique gold or silver coins appraised by a dealer, you should resist the temptation to clean them first.

  • How should I start a coin collection?
Many dealers supply inexpensive starter kits to beginners. If the dealer wants you to spend a lot of money right away, you should probably shop around for a new one.

  • What coin grading service do you recommend?
There are many companies that professionally grade coins; the two most respected are the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC).

  • How should I handle my coins?
Coins in mint condition will not stay that way for long if handled incorrectly. Any dealer knowledgeable about coin supplies should be able to tell you the correct holders and albums in which you can store your collection.
  • American Numismatic Association Money Museum
If you are involved in numismatics and are looking for a coin dealer or related supplies, find them through our association. Offering the highest quality services through our members.

Coin collecting is a pastime for many, but can a love for it become a business? It comes easily for holders of large collection books: become a coin dealer! These dealers travel to and from trade shows while fishing the internet and antique shops for finds. Building up supplies to sell at markup is the end result of happy hunting in the world of currency dealing.

It’s not easy to turn coin dealing into a real job, but with business sense it’s possible. One must first be knowledgeable in old, rare monies to achieve profit, as these are the most valuable. A potential dealer must also be holder of a large supply of currency that they are unafraid to disperse. Finally, a dealer must have negotiation skills when shopping for supplies, getting the best value for supplies. Being able to appraise one’s antique coins is also handy, but is not totally necessary.

As a coin dealer, one can elect to specialize in a certain currency depending on their knowledge and value. Silver and gold coins are very high-value items that sell quickly due to their metal composition. Rare currency in mint condition fetch high prices; if the dealer is savvy enough to put an album of them together, a sale can be made faster with a kit.

Dealers do not need any formal training to pursue sales-- all it takes is a love of commemorative, or rare, coin collecting and strong salesman instincts. Having good judgment in buying is important when distinguishing coin grades and price points.

Love money? Probably, but not quite so much as the coin dealers who love and sell their supplies for more than their original worth.
