Optometrists OD

Optometrists or doctors of optometry (ODs) can have an exciting career. They must complete the proper amount of schooling for usually about seven years. A one-year post graduate program is also required for any specialty. Optometrists also must pass a written and clinical state board exam to become licensed.

They may employ a variety of professionals within their offices, such as receptionists and assistants. Many doctors also sell glasses and contact lenses as well. Their services can include vision exams, treatment for minor eye problems, prescriptions for glasses and contacts. Optometrists may also diagnoses eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, and refer their patients to specialists.

ODs may also be able to recommend therapy, prescribe drops, and check for color blindness, astigmatisms, and depth perception problems. They can prescribe medication for certain eye diseases and can even perform minor surgery in an office setting, to remove foreign objects from the eyes, for example.

Related professions include ophthalmologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, opticians, optical goods retailers, and optometric physicians. These professionals all concentrate on the eye and related services.

Patients who need to be fitted for glasses can check with their insurance to make sure a particular optometrist is covered, then make an appointment for that service. Specialists, such as those who focus on pediatric care or vision therapy, can offer further services within their private practices for those with particular eye problems.

Optometrist offices can offer many different services, from vision correction to specialist referrals. Many will order contact lenses for patients, along with the latest fashions in frames. Treatments vary by office so patients should be proactive in finding an optometrist that not only accepts their insurance, but that fits their lifestyle as well. Long hours and weekends may be important selection criteria for a busy family or business professional.

"I grew up from a young child to adulthood, married with my own children. He and his wife have been extended family for me. He is a true professional who is well respected by many on all levels. I love my doctor and I couldn't have asked for a better Dr. for my family. He was a community activist (compassion for his community), mentor, business professional, a friend and more. Both he and his wife ..."

"did not pick up on my astigmatism, wrote a prescription for contact lens that I cannot wear because the script was not for astigmatism. I ordered my contacts online as they were $40.00 cheaper for the 12 months. When the company called to verify the prescription, the office did not call back to verify the info I gave them was correct. I would not go back to this office. ..."

"I never write reviews but I read them. I felt obligated to review Barnes and Carter because of my experiences there. I've never seen Dr. Carter but have seen Dr. Barnes and just recently took my 9 year old son there for an exam and glasses. Dr. Barnes' bedside manner is horrible. He's rude, dismissive and condescending. We he came into the examination room he barely acknowledged me, no hand shake ..."

"I got my glasses there and threw them to the garbage. The worse quality I ever had. Impossible to clean by any means, the color started peeling off immediately. Very bad customer service. There were rude kids inside, screaming their lungs off, disturbing the patients and the staff did nothing to impose the minimum of order and make the patients in the waiting room feel comfortable. "The doctor and his staff were kind, courteous and gave me options to help me see my best. Most places in the past simply didn't spend enough time educating me on my options. The doctor and his staff gave me all of my options to help me maximize my vision. They focused on me as a person and tailored everything to my unique needs. I now have clearer vision than I have ever had before. ..."

Never forget about the physical location and appearance of the optometrist doctor. If it's possible and the business is located in your town or city, you should definitely visit them in person. This will allow you to make all pertinent inquiries concerning any potential vision problems, laser surgery procedures, eye doctor prescription drops, local physicians, eye glasses, short sided correction, optometrist tools for exams, long sided eye test procedures, optometry doctor health therapy, optometric exam posters, contacts to replace glasses and drops to moisturize red or dry eyes you're concerned with. This way you'll have a much better idea of what they have to offer in regards to frames for glasses, contact lenses, short sided testing services and prescription drops for dry eyes. You may want to ask about any additional centers or branches they have to offer consumers like yourself. They may not be a single store, but rather a nationwide organization. Always address their customer service skills. The same can be said about literally any business or professional. If they fail to offer excellent customer service, you may want to take your business elsewhere. There are generally many competitors to choose from in this day and age. When all is said and done, if they cannot provide you with the eye examinations, correction for vision problems, doctor optometry procedures, contact lenses, prescription drops and glasses frames you're in the market for, then there is likely to be a different business that can. Lastly, be sure to recognize all price ranges, shipping fees and sales currently available. This can have an impact on the optometrist you choose.
