Tips on Buying Loading Dock Equipment
Use the following tips to help you buy loading dock equipment for your warehouse or building:

Tip #1: The best loading docks are planned loading docks.
Before you starting buying loading dock equipment, you need to plan out your loading dock area. Even if you bought a building that already had a loading dock area built into it, there are still things you can do to improve the quality of the loading dock area. Ask yourself how many deliveries you will be expected per day. Are there enough doors? How are you going to unload the freight? Do you have a way to restrain the trucks? Can your doors handle all truck styles? By answering these questions, you can find the right equipment you need.

Tip #2: Add extra dock bumpers for sloped approaches.
Many loading docks have slopes that the trucks back up or down to approach the doors. Standard dock bumpers need to be at least 4 inches thick, but if your loading dock is on an incline, you'll want to add additional bumper material to protect the building.

Tip #3: Don't overcrowd your dock at the expense of safety.
Between riser ramps, dock seals and dock shelters, your loading area can get pretty crowded. Add in several forklifts carrying pallets, and it could lead to a dangerous situation. Remember that dock seals and shelters need side room and head room, which can be compromised by trying to cram too many dock doors too close together. You may also want to look into purchasing safety barriers and rails for the loading area to keep things running smoothly.

Loading docks use levelers, steel and aluminum plates, boards, seals, and lifts within their line of work. Additional items of use include portable jacks of varying heights, ramps, machines, and safety equipment. All of this equipment can be a large expense for a company that has a loading bay or a warehouse. Loading docks can actually reduce the amount of money that they spend by purchasing equipment from companies. One of the big advantages of using a company is that they give you price discounts when you place bulk orders. Depending on how much you buy, you could save a significant sum of money that will help you lower your operation costs so that you can charge less for your services and products without losing any profits. You can find several loading dock equipment distributors listed in the online directory. This gives you a range of options, but some people find that it is hard to choose a supplier when there are so many options so we provide some guidelines to help you. First, you need to make sure the company has the equipment from manufacturers that you prefer. If you already know the types of bumpers, levelers, pallets, and aluminum and steel plates that you need, then make sure they carry them. If you are not sure, then ask the companies for catalogs so that you can browse their selections. Be sure to ask them what kind of discount you qualify for too so that you can determine which company will give you the best price on the equipment and supplies that you need.
