Organization Terminology
Organizations have numerous goals, structures and motives. They can be professional fellowships that serve to provide standards to which businesses must adhere, or charitable associations that provide help for people, animals or natural phenomena that are unable to survive without assistance. If you are curious about different types of organizations, then the following terms might help you understand the different purposes of organizations:

Nonprofit Organizations: Nonprofit organizations are businesses or corporations that exist solely to earn money for the purpose of supporting a type of charitable cause without earning a profit for owners or shareholders. Nonprofit organizations can serve a wide spectrum of causes, but often serve the community by providing health care, education, environmental resources and support for disenfranchised groups.

Advocacy Groups: Advocacy groups are political lobbyists that use their influence to affect public policy and legislation. Advocacy groups are often labor unions, consumer groups, faith based organizations, professional organizations and social organizations. While some advocacy groups have been scrutinized for working solely for commercial gain, many groups provide support and recognition for issues that would otherwise be overlooked.

Regulatory Bodies: Regulatory bodies are governing agencies that provide industry standards under which many professionals must operate. These organizations provide certification, outline policies and procedures and establish ethical guidelines.

Social Organizations: Social organizations are voluntary associations that provide support for groups that feel underrepresented by their communities or governmental legislation. Social organizations might serve groups of a particular ethnic background, economic level, religion or sexual orientation. Social organizations are often also nonprofit organizations.

It is important to find an organization that is right to you if you want to volunteer at a charity, nonprofit, or other association that benefits your community. You might be interested in education for children with disabilities, charities that support rescue and homeless missions, or nonprofits that support labor laws. If you live in a moderately populated area, then there are probably many locals like you who have already made a club, charity, nonprofit, or similar organization that supports your concerns and interests. You can start looking for the organizations in your area by searching in your online directory. This is an easy way to survey the different clubs and charities in your area without wasting a lot of time. When you find a charity or volunteer organization that interests you, you can contact them by phone to get more information that will help you decide if you would like to join. Find out if you have to pay membership dues in order to volunteer. The charity might give you the opportunity to volunteer without making a donation, but they often want financial contributions from everyone to help them offer their services to the community. You will also want to make sure that they support your perspective so that you agree with their stance on important issues. This will make you feel good about the work that you do for the club, nonprofit, children's rescue mission, charity, or similar volunteer organization. Visit the site and ask them about the different programs they offer to find the one that is best for you.
