FAQs about Mental Health Centers
Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and you cannot have one without the other. The following commonly asked questions deal with psychological issues and mental health centers:

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Both psychologists and psychiatrists work in the field of mental health, and they help patients with mental issues such as depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. However, there is a key difference between them. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specializes in mental health. A psychologist has a doctoral level degree in psychology, not medicine. Therefore, a psychiatrist can prescribe medications, while in many cases a psychologist cannot.

Does my insurance cover mental health treatment?
This depends on your individual insurance policy. Most full-coverage health insurance programs do cover mental health issues, while partial coverage programs do not. Look at your insurance policy or call your insurance provider with this question before visiting the mental health center.

What can I expect from visiting a mental health center?
Mental health centers and clinics differ depending on the type of work they do. Some, especially those specializing in substance abuse cases, operate like retreats. The visitor will check themselves in and stay for a certain amount of time. They will either have their own room, or share their room with another recovering addict. During their stay they are supervised by doctors, counselors, and other medical professionals highly trained in mental health. Other centers and clinics operate similar to a doctor's office. The patient will meet with their counselor to discuss their mental issues. Follow-up appointments and medication will be prescribed if necessary.

Mental health clinics offer invaluable aid to persons suffering from emotional problems. If you have decided to seek treatment from a mental health center in your community, there are some very important questions you should bear in mind. We'll explore some of them below.

  • How much will treatment cost?
You need to check if your insurance covers the full cost of treatment at the clinic. Though insurance policies typically cover treatment for mental illness, not all policies will pay for all forms of medical aid. If you have inadequate coverage, or if you lack insurance altogether, it is still possible to get low-cost help for mental health problems. Many mental health centers, especially those that receive public funding, calculate their fees on a sliding scale - that is, according to the income level of the patient.

  • What kind of treatments are available?
"Mental health" encompasses many different areas, and not all clinics provide treatments for every problem. Some clinics specialize in eating disorders. Others specialize in depression or related mood disorders. Some do not deal with substance abuse or drug addiction, and patients with these issues are often referred to another organization in the community.

  • What kinds of professionals are on staff?
There are many different types of mental health workers, and you should be aware of the skills and limitations of those who will be working with you. If you are open to taking medications for mental illness, only a psychiatrist can prescribe them. If you feel you may need aid in re-entering the workforce, this is an area that an outreach worker can help you with.

  • How should I prepare for the initial interview?
You should be ready to discuss your psychiatric history. You should also bring all relevant forms of identification (e.g., driver's license), as well paperwork detailing medications you have taken in the past.
