Frequently Asked Questions About Pet Breeders
Pet breeders, professionals who breed dogs, cats and other animals, may work independently or within a humane center or pet adoption agency. They should have experienced knowledge of selective breeding, grooming and animal husbandry, which is the breeding and raising of cattle and other livestock on a farm. Here are some frequently asked questions to pose to pet breeders:

What is your breeding specialty?
Every breeder has a specialty, whether a particular type of dog such as poodles or Yorkies, or agricultural livestock. Some breeders focus on wild or exotic animals, such as pythons, marmosets, leopards and wallabies. Look for classified ads and humane center sites online advertising the availability of these breeds, where you’ll also find all the necessary information you will need regarding the pet breeders’ specialty.

How do I find a reputable breeder?
A responsible breeder is devoted to the breed of pet they deal with. They stand behind every sale, know the breed inside and out, are active in dog shows and display genuine concern for the health of the pets. They make sure the parents are free of any hereditary diseases and that the offspring are in for a long, healthy life. They care about the homes they sell their breeds to and will take a pet back if the owner is not 100 percent satisfied.

Where can I get a specific breed of dog?
If you’re looking at a specific type or breed of dog, for instance, you may have a lot of luck at adoption centers and shelters. They have a lot of mixes there but also some purebreds if you hit it right. You can also check online and in the newspaper for private breeders who may live right down the street from you. There are also breed-specific rescue organizations nationwide that make it their mission to find suitable homes for unwanted pets.

Pet breeders focus on breeding quality animals and keeping them pure. This takes much research, studying common known genetic health defects and breeding only those animals that exhibit the finest traits of their breed. This is crucial to preventing the adoption of unwanted characteristics in generations of litters. This is also vital for dogs as bigger dogs such as Pit Bulls have much different risks of disease than Yorkies, and Dachshunds are much different than Poodles. This holds true for different breeds of cats as well.

Learning as much as possible about your particular breed of cat or dog is a great starting point to becoming a breeder, as this will produce the best quality puppy or kitten. The same applies to breeders of birds and fancy chinchillas. They must always be sure to have adequate facilities as well, since some species such as rabbits and snakes and some reptiles are known for having large litters, and they will be responsible for the welfare of the litter until such time they are placed in a home. While this makes for are an easy way to purchase a quality puppy or kitten from a kennel or classified ad, farm animals such as horses and cattle are also for sale through agriculture breeders.

Breeding larger animals such as horses or more exotic animals requires more specialized training. Husbandry has been in practice for thousands of years, and is focused on breeding only select animals to create the strongest, healthiest stock available.

Those who are interested in wild animals should be aware of certain restrictions on sale and possession of wild pets in their state, and contact the appropriate licensing authority to begin the process of becoming a breeder.
