Farming Terminology
Any organization that grows or cultivates organic matter for the purpose of commercial or industrial use can be classified as a type of farm. Vineyards grow grapes for wine; orchards produce fruits and nuts from trees; fish farms raise fish in captivity for use as a food source. Here is a list of terms associated with farming practices:

Pesticide: Any chemical used to destroy organisms that harm crops. A fungicide kills fungi; herbicides kill weeds; insecticides kill insects.

Irradiation: In agriculture, food irradiation is a procedure wherein crops are exposed to ionizing radiation in order to kill bacteria, viruses, insects and harmful organisms that may be present in food.

Heirloom: Any species of plant or vegetable that has not been engineered throughout the centuries for large scale agriculture. Heirloom plants and vegetables maintain the same traits as when they were originally cultivated.

Composting: The introduction of decomposed organic matter back into the earth for the purposes of soil enrichment. Materials that are typically used for composting are lawn clippings and vegetable scraps.

Humus: Organic matter that has decomposed into a nutrient rich dark soil-like material.

Silo: A large structure used for the bulk storage of materials such as grain and coal.

Free Range: Livestock raised in conditions that allow the animals to roam freely and graze or forage for a part of their food supply.

Fair Trade: Products that were grown or produced by farmers and agricultural workers that were paid a living wage, work under safe and sanitary conditions and trained in sustainable farming practices.

As you likely are aware, farmers and agriculture specialists work across the country to grow crops, breed fish and livestock, and produce dairy products for consumers. Over the years, farming has become more advanced, and better machinery is used to help supply people with all kinds of foods year-round. This includes beef, poultry, fruit, eggs, and grains. However, it is important for supermarkets, companies or individual buyers to know what they are getting into prior to purchasing from a specific farm. Therefore, you may want to consider asking a few questions before buying anything.

  • What farmland or area is used to grow the crops, produce or fruit?
When it comes to agriculture, the land and soil used for farming is important. As a buyer, you should make certain the land or area is safe and clean for growing produce and grains. After all, certain pollutants can contaminate certain areas.

  • Are the foods completely organic?
If you specialize in organic food sales or just prefer to purchase organic fish and produce, you need to inquire about the farming processes used. The farmer should not use any manufactured pesticides or fertilizers, and no antibiotics or hormones should be used in dairy and meat products. The large machinery and small equipment used should also be free of these contaminants.

  • Are the foods and dairy products ready for sale?
Some fruits, vegetables and dairy foods have to undergo certain cleaning processes before they can be sold. It is imperative to make sure all fruits, eggs, vegetables, milk, and grains are prepped properly before selling them in a supermarket or food store. This ensures safety and proper health regulations.
