Parks

Many people work within parks. Recreation Department professionals work to keep neighborhood parks in good condition, providing maintenance like lawn mowing, painting, trash collection, and general upkeep. They may replace old swings with new ones, make repairs, maintain hiking trails, and coordinate organized sports games. In addition, they may petition for funding for more equipment, on behalf of the community's family members and kids.

State and national parks, as well as reservations, are protected by the government and are open to everyone. Professionals may include campground coordinators, park rangers, repair and maintenance crews, and tour guides. They all work together to maintain and present the best forest possible, complete with neat camp sites, wildlife, trails to hike, and creeks to swim in.

Those who love the outdoors and enjoy meeting new people each day would be ideally suited for working in a state or national park. An interest in the environment and animals is a plus. Positions can range from full time to seasonal to volunteer. Parks may provide a variety of offerings to visitors, such as summer camps for kids, swimming lessons, and family nature hikes. These parks may have a hand in community grass roots efforts, helping to build awareness of wildlife protection, for instance. They also typically provide park protection, permits, and visitor services.

Small neighborhood parks sponsored by recreation departments also offer visitors a variety of services, such as concession stands, playgrounds, free parking, grassy picnic areas, and access to hiking and biking trails. Parks in general are all about getting in touch with nature. That's why people visit them, expecting good, clean fun where kids can play on the swings and adults can take a leisurely stroll.

Many state, national, and public parks have sports areas like bike trails, hiking trails, waters for fishing, and baseball diamonds and soccer fields. If you are looking for a public park that has sports areas, then you will want to be certain that you choose one that is right for you. There is more to parks than just sports, though. Some people enjoy amusement parks. Theme parks and amusement parks have recreational playgrounds that many kids can play on. You might also want to visit local parks to watch the wildlife or go fishing in their lake and stream waters. Many people find that taking a break from city life and getting out to enjoy nature is a great stress reliever. You might want to take your kids to a park that not only has a recreational area, but also bike trails and hiking trails so that you can stroll through the woods while you look for the local animals and spot different types of plants. Parks that have an arboretum are great ways to acquaint your children with the different plants that live in your area. If the public parks allow you to bring pets with you, then you should always be certain that you clean up after them and keep them on a leash unless they are in an area that allows you to let them run free and socialize with other animals. Lots of cities have web sites where you can find listings of the local parks that you can enjoy that also tells you if they have sports area, recreational areas, and trails.
