Tips for Shopping at Grocery Stores and Markets
Grocery stores and markets offer a variety of fresh, frozen, canned and processed foods for sale. From baked goods and fruits to deli meats and cheeses, you are faced with many options when heading to the market. Some are small neighborhood markets that specialize in ethnic foods, while others are super store chains that not only sell food but offer services as well, such as portraits, eye care and prescriptions. Keep these tips in mind the next time you visit your local market.

Tip #1: Time Your Visit Right
Wednesdays seem to be the ideal time to visit the grocery store. Why? Most stores begin their weekly sales at this time, which run through Sunday. That means their best products are out on the floor, but they’re also marking down discount items that didn’t sell the previous week. So you get the cream of the crop, from fresh seafood and vegetables to discounted convenience items.

Tip #2: Make Friends with the People in the Butcher and Seafood Departments
It can’t hurt to be friendly with the market’s butcher or seafood department workers. If you’re on a first name basis with an employee, the chances of you getting the best cut of USDA meat or getting your haddock skinned without asking, are much better. You can also ask candid questions of the quality of the meat, chicken, pork and fish.

Tip #3: Double Up on Coupons
Hit the grocery store when it’s a double coupon day. Download virtual coupons and print them out to save more money on your trip. Many stores will honor other stores’ coupons if you ask.

The National Grocers Association
Dedicated to ensuring independent grocers, community-focused retailers, and wholesalers the opportunity to succeed and better serve the consumer through its policies, advocacy, programs and services.

Grocery store managers are constantly interacting with customers. It can be a fun job for those that love talking to people. Having exceptional customer service skills are a necessity because customer interaction simply cannot be avoided. Speaking to customers is not the only thing a manager does throughout their day. They also must oversee each department of the store and make sure the employees are keeping it clean.

The most difficult task of being a grocery store manager is making sure the food is fresh and not outdated in every department, including the bakery, deli, organic section, produce section, and meat department. While this is part of each individual employee's job, it is ultimately the responsibility of the manager. The supermarket is often a very large building with thousands of products, so this task is more difficult than it sounds. It takes a special kind of person to keep a shop like this in perfect condition.

The manager of a supermarket is responsible for not having outdated food items and goods such as cheese, fish, seafood, produce, and milk. When people come to shop at a grocery store, it is only natural for them to want to buy products that are fresh, regardless of how cheap or expensive they are. The manager must have great attention to detail along with those exceptional customer service skills or they will not be able to successfully handle this occupation. It is not a job for everyone, but those that are successful are the ones that know how to interact well with customers and keep the store clean.
