How to Properly Display the Flag

Many want the patriotic privilege of having the American flag flying in their yard. While anyone can build a staff, there are certain rules that the government has set out in regards to how the emblem should be treated. Below are the most common questions citizens have and their answers.

  • Are there any rules that should be followed when displaying the flag?
There are four rules to keep in mind. No matter what country in the world it is from, no banner should be hung on the pole above the American flag. The second is no other flag should be larger than the national emblem. The third is this country’s pennant should be raised first and lowered last. The fourth is that the flag should always be lit, either by the sun or electric lights.

  • Do I really have to destroy my flag if it touches the ground?
No. If the flag touches the ground, it does not matter. If it is dirty or in need of repair, clean it with mild soap and fix any tears. If you have a flag that is very dirty and tattered, the code stresses the importance of retiring it from service. It is suggested that you burn it and your local fire department can help you with this.

  • Why are flags flown at half-mast?
This is usually a sign of mourning. Out of respect for the services they provided for the world, when the death of a President, Vice President, Chief Justice, or Speaker of the House occurs, the banners of all the government buildings are lowered halfway down the poles.

Some choose to fly the American flag outside their homes or offices to show their patriotic pride. Others invest in decorative pennants that celebrate their alma maters or banners that promote their businesses or favorite teams. To meet this demand, a number of flag and banner companies have been founded which create special interest options, like Confederate flags, custom models for corporate events, and world flags that celebrate one's heritage.

While American flags continue to dominate the market as emblems of United States identity; it is possible to procure the emblem of any country of the world through online and local stores. Such stores typically carry all the necessary accessories for displaying the banner, including aluminum or fiberglass poles and kits containing string to hang them with ease. Larger poles, such as free-standing models outside public or religious buildings, will often require professional installation of the mast and surrounding lighting, which can be carried out by most contractors.

For those who wish to further display their patriotic pride, decorations that feature the colors of a country's flag are also available. For military parades, bunting and bows in red, white and blue are a common sight. These decorations need not adhere to the strict customs regarding the display of a country's official flag, and can therefore be used in more creative ways.

Professional repair and cleaning services are available for those who own flags with special historical or personal importance. These companies take pains to restore old national banners, state and Confederate flags to their former glory, while treating them with respect and maintaining their original materials. For many, the symbolism behind flags merits an extra degree of respect in terms of the way they are treated and displayed. Companies that manufacture, install and repair flags work to ensure that respect is maintained.
