Questions to Ask Your Engraver

From chiseling to laser etching, engraving is a great option for customizing something. Engraving is available for a very wide variety of items, from gifts to personal possessions. Be sure to explore the abilities of your engraver. Here are a few questions to get you started.

  • Which engraving technique do you use?
There are many different ways to engrave an object, and some methods work better than others on certain materials. Most engravers can easily etch words and designs into rings and other metal objects. Unfortunately, delicate materials like glass and crystal require special equipment like a laser or an air compressor. Experienced engravers will be able to tell you what engraving method they use and what substances are most appropriate for their technique.

  • What can my engraving consist of?
The amount of ornamentation that can be etched into an item depends on different factors. The object’s size is typically a key concern, particularly with rings and other jewelry. Glass and other fragile substances may have a limit on what can be cut into them, especially if the material has any hairline cracks in it. Also, for efficiency reasons, some engraving services will only allow initials, names, or short messages to be cut into their products.

  • How long will the engraving process take?
If a flask, plaque, or other metal item is purchased at a store it can typically be engraved very quickly. Sometimes your gift will be available in just one hour, but that depends on the engraver’s schedule and the complexity of your ornamentation. Engraved items ordered online will often require one to four extra days to process and ship, but rush service may be available for an additional fee. Be sure your item has enough space for your engraving, and be sure you allow enough time to receive the item.

The engraving industry is made up of different methods, such as laser engraving, hand etched designs, and computerized etching. As the years wear on, more and more high-tech laser techniques and precision tools become available. Companies are segmented into various specialties. One engraver may offer only metal engraving, while another etches wood. Still other companies offer industrial etching for large-scale jobs.

Jewelers often have an engraver on site to fulfill orders from customers who want wedding rings, engagement rings, watches, and charm bracelets engraved with special custom messages. Small jewelry shops may have to send out for this service. Trophy providers also offer engraving on awards and signs.

Manufacturers of engraving machines may also provide repair, maintenance, and design services. Engravers by trade often purchase tools, routers, and other machines directly from the manufacturer. Many engravers start out learning the craft by hand. Therefore, these professionals must have an eye for detail, a steady hand, and patience. Even with the use of high-tech machines, attention to detail is a must. Although no specific education is required, good communication skills are necessary, as is an ability to work on strict deadlines.

Metal engraving is an art form, as are other forms of engraving, such as on glass or wood. It takes lots of training and experience to master this art. Prices can vary by provider, but the basic rates may hover around the same areas. Custom designs, images, intricate fonts and long messages will obviously cost more than standard designs or short messages. Many charge by the letter or word, and often work within jewelry shops.

Engravers, using routers, machines, computerized lasers, and good old fashioned hand etching, should be able to provide the customer with flawless work within the agreed-upon time-line, whether that involves tags to identify a pet, or a personalized picture frame.
