Demolition Services Terminology
Demolition contractors tear down structures or buildings in order to clear the plot of land for a new structure or use. If you are investigating demolition services, then there are a few terms to remember that might help you to choose the right contractor for your needs:

Mechanical Demolition: The demolition of structures using heavy machinery such as bulldozers, hydraulic shears, wrecking balls and forklifts. Mechanical demolition also involves elements of manual demolition.

Manual Demolition: The demolition of small homes or buildings using hand tools such as sledge hammers or jackhammers. For safety reasons, manual demolition very often incorporates elements of mechanical demolition. When an entire structure is to be leveled, workers are vulnerable to injury from falling debris when demolishing structures manually.

Building Implosion: The technique of using a controlled series of explosions within a large structure in order to cause the building to collapse upon itself. The explosives are adhered to the structural support beams and set off simultaneously.

Hazwoper: Stands for Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response. This is a license many demolition contractors receive after completing the OSHA training courses.

Strip Outs: The removal of the internal components of a structure without demolishing the framework or exterior. You can strip out entire buildings, whole floors or just individual rooms.

Salvage Value: The value of components within a structure about to be demolished. Some electrical wiring or beams can be resold, and often demolition contractors will lower the cost of the demolition based upon the cost of the salvaged materials if the contractor is allowed to keep them.

Deconstruction: An environmentally friendly method of tearing down a structure, wherein the framework is dismantled in such a way that the integrity of the components is maintained. This means that the components can be re-used in different structures or recycled.

"They turned the gas off of course. However two hours after they left. I had to call them as my furnace and hot water tank were not re-lit. As a single woman I have no idea how to do this. After many calls and no return calls back. I have had to hire someone to relight both things. Also they had to dig a 3 by 3 hole in my cement new driveway. I was told they would be out to put cement back ..."

When you consider hiring a demolition contractor or consultant for your residential, commercial, or industrial project, there are several things to take into account. Make sure the contractor provides the services you require, such as scrap metal cleanup and recycling, asphalt and concrete crushing, excavation, and abatement. Each project is different in terms of requirements. Environmental companies will require a contractor with special environmental experience. Excavation professionals will need a company with experience in delicate items, such as removing rocks from a dinosaur dig site. Get several price quotes from several companies to ensure the best deal. Whether as part of a remodel, new construction, renovation, or demolition contractors can provide the services you need to dismantle a building or crush asphalt.

  • What methods do you use to demolish a home or other building?
Demolition contractors typically use a combinations of techniques through explosives, whether for explosions or implosions. They also use equipment like backhoes, cranes, and tractors for excavation and digging, as well as wrecking balls for breaking through concrete.

  • Do you work on home renovations, remodels, and additions, or do you focus on larger demolition projects at construction sites?
Some companies focus on one area, such as commercial demolition, but others work on a smaller residential scale.

  • Do you offer free consultations and estimates?
This can save you time and money by gathering free quotes from several contractors before settling on one service provider.

  • Do you provide environmentally safe cleanup?
Many companies are forward thinkers when it comes to focusing on what’s best for the environment, such as properly handling hazardous materials.
