Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Dance Instructor

Taking a dance lesson from an instructor or studio can be a fun way to move and get a fun workout and learn the latest dance to wow the crowd at the next wedding. But before you salsa down to the studio and sign up for a lesson or class, there are some important questions you should ask first.

  • What kind of dance lessons do I want?
Consider your level of fitness, how much rhythm you actually have and how comfortable you are working with a partner before you pick a class. All of these factors will help you determine whether you are looking for salsa, tap or modern dance lessons.

  • What kind of instructions does the studio specialize in?
If the dance school near you specializes in ballroom swing, then you should stick with that for the best experience. And if you want to learn tap, a belly dancing school probably won't be much help.

  • How much time do I have to rehearse?
If you want to take a lesson in ballroom, tap or a more advanced level of dance it's going to require much more time to rehearse than a dance where you don't have to coordinate with a partner. Hip Hop dance usually only requires learning the steps and can be practiced at home alone.

  • How comfortable am I with my body?
Most classes require you to perform in front of others, so if you're uncomfortable with pole dancing in front of a crowd or shaking your belly with strangers, you might want to consider something less flirty like ballet or jazz dance.

"I highly recommend Expressions in Motion Dance and Gymnastics Studio for anyone in the Bay City area who would like their children to learn to dance or tumble. Miss Theresa Baker is a wonderful, kind, caring, patient teacher and my children love her. The classes are affordable and the class sizes are small. It's a wonderful, caring environment in which children can learn and progress. ..."

Dance instructors play a crucial role in teaching and guiding their students. Along with providing the necessary skills to their pupils, they also offer encouragement and inspiration to the people who attend their lessons. Instructors typically specialize in specific forms and styles. For instance, they may focus on giving salsa lessons. Along with salsa dancing, some teachers may specialize in hip hop and jazz dancing. Other common styles trainers focus on include tap, swing, modern and ballroom dancing. In addition, belly and pole dancing are other common areas of focus.

Before being able to teach a class in a dance studio, teachers typically need years of experience. Most professional dance instructors possess an innate sense of rhythm and balance. The level of experience required of prospective instructors, by schools and studios often varies. For instance, ballet schools regularly require their teachers to have a significant amount of experience performing in ballet companies before being hired. In addition, people interested in teaching aerobic dance classes typically have years of experience and knowledge in the fitness and workout training professions. Likewise, professional choreographers interested in helping performers coordinate and rehearse their moves and routines often have years of experience in the theater and entertainment industry.

Along with teaching classes, many instructors also work in the dance and entertainment industry. For instance, they may participate in stage productions. In addition, some teachers may also be hired by wedding DJs to provide entertainment during the reception ceremony. In general, people interested in becoming professional dance instructors often have an advanced level of training and expertise. In addition, having a patient and understanding demeanor is often essential when instructing children and adults. Overall, becoming a dance instructor is often a very rich and satisfying career for many people.
