Boot Terms
Boots are the most versatile form of footwear; they can be elegant or industrial, couture or all-weather. Boots can be bedazzled with rhinestones on the platform heel or in compliance with rigorous military construction guidelines. Here are a few terms for various kinds of boots:

Wellington Boots: Waterproof boots made either of rubber or PVC, polyvinyl chloride, that stop just short of the knee. They are used as all weather boots and are also worn in a variety of industrial applications for protection.

Western Boots: A type of riding boot favored by cowboys. They typically have a Cuban heel, are mid-calf, have a pointed toe and are made of cowhide or sometimes alligator or buffalo skin leather.

Roper Boots: A style of cowboy boot with a short, squared heel shaped to the sole of the boot, slightly above ankle high and with a rounded or squared toe.

Waders: Water proof vulcanized rubber boots that extend from the sole of the foot all the way up to the chest. They are worn by angle fishermen, hunters of water fowl, municipal water supply workers or anyone regularly submerged in fluid.

Jodhpur Boots: An equestrian ankle boot that traditionally fastened with a strap encircling the ankle, although elastic side jodhpur boots are common today. They have a rounded toe and a low heel.

Moccasin: A soft leather ankle high slipper boot, consisting of one piece of material serving for the sides and sole and stitched together at the top. They are primarily for outdoor use, but Australian sheep shearers wear a felt version because they grip wooden floors well.

When purchasing boots for sale at a retail or specialty store, you might need to know a few questions that can help you determine which types will suit your needs best. The following questions should help you choose a boot style that you will find useful.

  • Do you have waterproof shoes that are designed for hiking in rain and snow?
Hiking boots can use a variety of materials to prevent moisture from seeping inside. If you plan to use your hiking boots in the rain or snow, then look for options that use leather, rubber, or other waterproof materials to keep your feet dry.

  • Do you ever offer sales on shoes for men and women?
A pair of well-made cowboy, hiking, hunting, and snow boots can cost quite a bit of money. If a store has sales, though, you might want to wait until prices drop. It could help you save a substantial amount of cash.

  • Does your store have a variety of riding shoes for sale?
The type of boot that you wear could depend on the style of horseback riding that you prefer. Look for a store that offers a wider range of options for men and women. That way, you can choose one that meets your specific riding needs.

  • Do you offer repair services?
Over time, boots made for working, hiking, skiing, or horseback riding can start to show their age. Look for a store that offers leatherworking and other repair services to keep your boots in good condition.
