Important Terms to Know About Barrels and Drums
You may need access to a variety of barrels and drums when in the industrial cargo storage, commercial container, oil drum, water or materials industries. Use shipping and storage drums for a wide spectrum of products, from oil and gas to food and beverages. You can purchase barrel and drum products from manufacturers who specialize in anything from closed head barrels and open head drums to recycling drums and straight sided drums. Here are some important terms to know about barrels and drums.

Open Top Drums: Drums sealed by a mechanical ring clamp that provides enough pressure to store non-volatile liquids with an airtight seal.

Welded Top Drums: Drums with a lid that has been welded on tight, used in the case of liquids or hazardous materials.

Injection Blow Molding: A technology used in manufacturing plastic drums, featuring a separate lid or a welded top with molded bung holes.

Bung Hole: A hold that has been bored into a barrel to remove contents. The bung is similar to a cork, which caps the hole.

Toppers: Drum pads that can absorb leaks and drips from contents of a drum. They often feature a pre-cut pump hole and can quickly absorb a variety of liquids, such as gas or hazardous materials, before they spill over and cause a mess.

Industrial Mats: Large, heavy, tough, durable mats used in industrial applications to absorb spills well, usually made of a non-penetrable backing with non-skid features.

Drum Wrenches: Tools used for opening and closing drums made from plastic or steel.

If you need a drum or a barrel for storage purposes, there are several things that need to be considered. Among these considerations are the style and material of which the drum is made. Perform a search online to find the best storage container for your intended purpose. The following are questions to ask before you make your purchase.

  • For what purpose are you using the drum?
There are many styles and types of drums to choose from. Are you using the container for commercial purposes, there may be minimum standards to abide by. This depends on the industry in which you work. The standards will be based on your state or federal law. The same applies if the drum is to be used for storage of chemicals or petroleum.

  • What type of barrel do you want?
You may wish to have a metal, plastic or wooden barrel. Metal or steel drums are more likely to rust. Plastic drums have a tighter seal and are cheaper for the consumer. Wooden drums are more likely to be used for dry goods. If you are storing liquid, you can choose a barrel with an open-head or a closed-head. If you are storing a dry product, you will need a barrel with an open-head.

  • What size barrel do you need?
Barrels and drums come in various shapes and sizes. Whether the drum is steel or plastic, there are different sizes available to you. Determine how many gallons or liters will be necessary for your intended use.
