Questions to Ask About Vitamin and Food Supplements

The human body requires vitamins for health, nutrition and energy to survive. Vitamins can be found in foods, supplements or some are created within the body. A vitamin deficiency can lead to disease, illness, weight loss or gain and much more. If you think you may have a deficiency consult a nutritionist, doctor or other professional who can recommend supplements or a diet change based on your needs. Here are some questions to ask at a vitamin and food supplement store.

  • I am looking for a supplement for an increase in overall health and vitamin intake, what do you suggest?
Multi-vitamins are popular for both men and women and sold as tablets, pills, capsules, powders, liquids and more. Multivitamins are composed of a wide range of ingredients from iron and calcium to chromium, batecarotene and much more. Men and women’s multis are composed of different ingredients for custom nutrition.

  • I need a supplement however I prefer more natural options, what do you suggest?
If you are unable to achieve health through food there are a variety of more natural supplements available for use. Herbs and organic supplements are available at many stores. Herbs such as green tea, licorice, kava, ginger, bitter melon and more are popularly used for different health reasons.

  • I am looking to lose weight naturally, are there supplements to help?
A healthy diet and exercise are the best ways to lose weight but certain supplements can help. Calcium, fiber and vitamin B12 and B6 are often suggested to increase metabolism and more. Be sure to consult with your doctor before taking supplements for weight loss and remember that anything promising a quick fix to lose weight is most likely too good to be true but hard work and dedication will pay off.

Vitamins and supplements are sold by health food stores, grocery stores and drug stores. They are also available online or through mail order.

Claims made about various foods are not regulated in the way drugs are. Food supplements are not supposed to claim to prevent or cure a specific disease, but health claims proliferate, especially those connected to weight loss and speeding the metabolism. Workers in health food stores in particular may be faced with selling large numbers of herbs, vitamins, and minerals. Understanding what these supplements can and cannot do is vital. So is a basic understanding of overall nutrition.

Workers need to know who might need extra calcium and iron. Such stores often sell diet pills and other weight loss aids. Protein shakes and bars are marketed to body builders, weight lifters and athletes. Drug stores also sell the more popular supplements and herbals. Calcium is one of the most often taken. They also sell multivitamins which are carefully labeled, for example for women over sixty. Drug and grocery stores, however, seldom sell the more exotic organic products, although they do sell commonly purchased items at a discount.

Individuals may take a supplement to address a deficiency or deal with specific nutritional needs. For example, pregnant women are often advised to take folic acid. Workers need to be aware of specific nutrient needs for various situations. Although daily supplementation is no substitute for a balanced diet, it can be hard to achieve things the purely natural way. There will continue to be a market for, for example, fiber supplements. Some herbs do seem to boost energy levels in a gentler way than caffeine. Health store workers also need to be aware that some supplements may be dangerous to certain customers, especially children and pregnant and nursing women.
