Tips for Choosing Storm Windows and Doors
Storm windows and doors are necessary in the cold winter months, because they offer extra weather protection, vital in keeping out the cold and sealing in the heat. More secure than screen doors and windows, glass storm windows and doors come in many materials, such as vinyl, aluminum, fiberglass and PVC. Choosing energy-efficient products will help to lower your monthly energy bill because they’re better at conserving heat or cool air, depending on the season.

Tip #1: Look for Energy-efficient Windows and Doors
Not only do energy efficient windows and doors present a higher energy savings on your monthly bills, you may also enjoy a tax write-off or credit by installing storm windows and doors that bear an energy saving label. You can also take advantage of rebates offered by local utility companies to save you even more money.

Tip #2: Hire a Professional to Install the Windows and Doors
While you may be very handy when it comes to household fix-it jobs, this one is best left up to the professionals, who can best install them according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If you attempt the installation yourself, you may void the warranty which would mean you can’t return or replace the windows and doors.

Tip #3: Consider Impact-resistant Glass for High-Risk Areas
If you live along a coastal area in a hurricane zone or a climate that frequently experiences severe storms and winds, you may want to install impact-resistant glass to prevent debris from breaking the windows and doors in the event of nasty weather.

Storm windows and doors can be useful additions to your house. But before you run out to purchase some, there are some important considerations you should bear in mind.

  • What kind of storm door frame do I need?
Storm doors are not all alike, and their differences are more than merely cosmetic. Wood storm doors are quite popular, but there are drawbacks associated with them. Wood frames are vulnerable to the elements, and unless they are carefully coated and painted they will soon need to be replaced. Also, if you want a door with a glass panel, be aware that wood frames are usually considered inappropriate for this. Wood frames are generally used only with screen or plastic panels. Aluminum frames are more durable, but they also have a tendency to absorb heat. For this reason, aluminum is not the best choice if you're trying to make your home more energy efficient. Vinyl storm doors have the advantage of being inexpensive and resistant to corrosion, but they tend to be less durable.

  • What kind of storm window do I need?
There are two basic types of storm windows: interior and exterior. Both kinds can help insulate your house, and the same types of screens and frames are available with each. Exterior types can also help secure an outside-facing window against bad weather conditions, such as hail. However, their exposure to the elements means exterior storm windows will need to be replaced more often. Also, on certain types of windows--such as a casement window that opens outward--an exterior model cannot be installed at all. Interior models are easier to install, repair, and replace.
