Questions to Ask about a Nursing or Convalescent Home

Committing to a nursing or convalescent home takes time and effort. Those who need assistance, whether short or long term, should be careful when picking a place to live. A good rest home can be found with some searching, but first, ask some questions of the nurses or representatives. Learning about your center is the best thing you can do to transition into assisted living.

  • When do you allow visits?
Always visit your potential convalescent or retirement facility first. This will allow you to get an idea of what it will be like to live there.

  • How many nurses do you have on staff?
Asking this will allow you to gauge the staff of your retirement home. Having nurses on staff at all hours is essential. Many rest homes will have health care representatives and therapists on shifts, even at night.

  • How long do you allow convalescent or transitional stay?
If you are seeking short-term care, find out how long you will be allowed to stay. Most visits will last several months. Also ensure that your insurance covers the stay, as the costs can be very high otherwise.

  • What kind of training do you provide your staff?
This is a difficult quality to assess, but try to get an idea of the kind of skill the staff has. For the elderly, a polite and skilled nurse will be much more effective than an untrained one.

  • What daily activities are provided for seniors?
If you are seeking to place a family member in a nursing home, you will want to know that they are going to have activities to engage in. Otherwise, it might be an unpleasant stay.

"I worked at this place for 7+ years and am leaving. This place has gone downhill since a new company bought it. This used to be a nice facility but now they have a new RN who is bad at her job. She does her homework in her office all day and has no idea what's going on in the building. She relies on her staff to make all the decisions because she's not worked long-term care long enough to know wha ..."

Convalescent homes and nursing facilities for the elderly are a major business now. More and more people are seeing the need for assisted living facilities and retirement community locations. Many people work in this business because of how rewarding it can be. Most nurse professionals and skilled caretakers that work in this field enjoy helping people. Depending on what type of senior home or convalescent facility you work in, the clients or patients will vary in regards to what they need each day.

Since many professionals that work in convalescent homes and senior living facilities have to care for the elderly and sick, it is common to need a nursing degree before becoming employed in this field. After all, you may be dealing with the health of another adult day and night. Some clients will be long term and others will only live there a short amount of time until they recover from an illness. Either way, they will require you to give them a certain level of care. Then again, some nursing center locations and retirement homes do not require a college degree. You will be trained at the facility you work at. However, you still may be responsible to care for a life. This is a serious job position that requires care and patience.

Any time you work in a nursing center or convalescent home to assist the elderly, you can expect to work with nurses, doctors, and other caregivers. Also, senior living facilities are commonly frequented by family members, so you can expect to encounter them regularly.
