Important Terms to Know About Jeans
Shopping for jeans is not everyone’s favorite thing to do. Anyone who has been in a dressing room trying on 10 different pairs knows how daunting this task can be. These denim articles of clothing should fit comfortably to your body type. That’s why there are so many styles out there to choose from, such as relaxed fit or skinny jeans, not to mention colors. Although most are blue, jeans can also come in black, gray, white, and a rainbow of colors. How do you navigate the sea of jean styles? Check out the following terms before heading out to the store to pick up your next pair of jeans to go with your jean jacket.

Straight Leg: Featuring a larger opening in the calves and ankles than skinny jeans, this type lends a longer look to your legs.

Relaxed Fit: Without being too baggy, this fit features a slightly roomy seat and thigh for maximum comfort.

Low Rise: Jeans with a waistband that sits about two inches or more below the wearer’s natural waistline.

Slim Fit: Jeans that are narrow at the seat and thigh.

Slouch: A type of denim that sits lower on the hips.

Flare Leg: A type of denim in which the width of the leg increases, from the knee to the hem, by more than an inch. Similar to boot cut, these are great for wearing with boots.

Distressed: Jeans with nicking and grinding featuring a pinched waistband to give them that well-used look.

Carpenter Pants: Loose fitting jeans in the seat and thigh, with side loops for tools and narrow pockets.

Fashion and clothing designers, denim manufacturers, outlet stores and retail stores all work together to provide consumers with choices and options when it comes to new and used denim clothing, including jeans, pants, skirts, casual shorts and other apparel and accessories.

With the popularity of blue jeans in the United States and around the world, every major clothing retailer sells blue jeans and related products. The process starts with the clothing designers working independently or with a large manufacturer to create pants which will appeal to customers of the brand. Style and cut, size and fit are all important aspects the designer has to consider when coming up with designs for jeans. Denim pants, skirts and shorts may be high rise or low rise, which describes where the waistband sits on the waist or hip. Skinny jeans and relaxed fit are other options, depending on the customers' personal style and whether they're looking for a casual or more formal style.

Once designs are complete, they are modeled on runways at fashion shows of individual designers, or go straight into production with the manufacturers. Additional thought is given by the designers and manufacturers with regards to denim color and treatments. For example, to achieve a vintage or other specific look, denim jeans may be acid washed, bleached, or given holes or other style details. The quality of the denim can determine the price of the finished jeans, whether they are cheap or expensive.

Once produced, jeans and other clothing items made from denim are sent to retail outlets, department stores and discount stores, who then sell the finished products to consumers directly, to men, women and children around the world.
