Frequently Asked Questions About Detective Agencies
The following are some questions that are frequently asked about detective agencies.

What kinds of jobs do detectives generally handle?
Detective agencies can do many different things. Some agencies and detectives choose to focus on a particular area of expertise. There are legal investigators that can compile information in regards to a case. Corporate investigators can track misuse of company bank accounts. In other words, a PI could do anything from spying on a cheating spouse to helping examine a police crime scene. You will want to find an agency or detective who specializes in the type of service you are seeking.

What information do I need to provide a detective agency with?
In the case of investigating a person, you will need to provide the agency with a photo of the subject, as well as his or her last known address or place of employment. A date of birth, social security number, and even a description of the person’s vehicle would all be helpful. Remember, the more information you can provide a PI with, the quicker and more effective the investigation will be.

What qualifications should a detective agency and its private eyes have?
There are no legal requirements to be a private eye. It is good to find someone with a relevant college education. Many PIs have degrees in business, computer science, or law. You will want to make sure the agency or detective has plenty of experience and a positive reputation. You can check out reviews from customers on this website to find a reliable agency or PI.

How do private investigators obtain information?
When doing a background check, missing person search, or other individually based service, a PI will typically start with public records. This information includes looking up legal entanglements, listed addresses and phone numbers, and other details that are often obtained online. Contacting people and companies in regards to the case is important. Many PIs will also perform surveillance work, which could include staking out a location or following a person around.

If you live in a populated, urban area, it may be easy to find a detective at a large agency. Many states require a license, but one can just as well hire a self-employed licensed investigator as one who works for an agency. It is always prudent to check credentials, as anyone can claim to be capable of investigative work. For surveillance within a business, it is best to hire someone who works for a security business. Because of the nature of the work that private detectives do, they may demand a one-time or ongoing retainer fee, and will not be able to guarantee the success of the endeavor.

Many private investigators come from an enforcement background. They usually will have served some time in the police force, military, or security professions before working privately. This gives them experience with criminal behavior and a strong understanding of the law and legal proceedings. Many detectives also come from a background of forensics and claims investigation. Experience may also include technological and monetary fraud. Many detectives work exclusively in this field, where they pour through records and trace paper trails. Those who do may also have extensive experience working in areas of technology and finance, including computer programmers and accountants.

Private investigators must have a keen eye for detail and extraordinary patience. The bulk of investigative work is very mundane and time-consuming: keeping surveillance on a cheating spouse can involve waiting undercover for many hours in one spot without attracting undue attention. Creativity and ingenuity are major assets in this profession. To locate a missing person or recover a stolen item, one must often extrapolate from very little information and put many different resources to use. The definitive skill that licensed investigators possess is an exceptional ability to create, access and interpret information.
