Tips for Selecting a Charity
The following are some tips to help you select a charity to donate to:

Tip #1: Research the organization
Your donations will make the most difference if they are sent to just one group. There are countless charity and non-profit organizations, so it may be difficult to select just one organization to donate to. The easiest way to select an organization is to pick a cause that is close to your own heart. You could help feed the hungry, cure a disease, or rescue animals. Just make sure the organization you select is properly registered and regularly reports its activities. A local group may not be as well-known as a national organization, but if you give to a local group you are more likely to see the direct result of your donation.

Tip #2: Beware of scams
Unfortunately, there are individuals who pose as representatives of charity or non-profit organizations so they can take advantage of generous people. Don’t be taken in by solicitors, whether they are on the phone or outside the local grocery store. Never give away your credit card or bank account information to an unconfirmed representative.

Tip #3: Make sure your donation is received
During your research, you should have obtained contact information for your charity or non-profit group. Make sure all donations are mailed or taken directly to the organization’s office. Sending a check is the best way to ensure your donation is received by the correct group. Just make sure you know exactly who the check needs to be made out to.

Tip #4: Take an extra step
Every charity and non-profit groups appreciate monetary donations, but you may feel like you are supporting the common good of the group more if you take the time to contribute in another way. Taking the time to support a group’s philanthropy project is usually far more satisfying than writing out a check. This can be accomplished through donating specific items, volunteering to work at a fundraising event, and even by sponsoring a project. Many people take great pride in helping their favorite charity raise money.

Countless men, women and businesses donate money to charities each year. After all, there are wonderful organizations that provide assistance to plenty of children and adults in need. However, before you volunteer your time or donate some money to a charity, you should make certain you understand what it is you are getting involved with. Check out the queries listed below, and consider asking them before assisting a specific charity.

  • Is this charity or event fundraiser nonprofit?
While there are many charities and event fundraisers to assist homeless children and battered women, it is imperative to find out where your donations are going, and if the organization is making money. True charities and philanthropy foundations should not make a profit.

  • Whom does the charity help?
Needless to say, you will want to know where your money is going or whom you are volunteering your time to assist. It could be homeless people, abused children, or people in another country. Inquire before getting involved with the organization.

  • Is it more helpful to donate money or time volunteering?
If you are willing to give funds or time to assist with a nonprofit organization or charity, find out which one benefits the organization more. This way you can really contribute to help others. While some charities may need donations more, others may need physical assistance more.

  • How does the money help people in need?
If you are providing donations to an emergency relief program or shelter, you should learn more about how the funds assist these people in need. After all, it may provide a different type of aid than you presume.
