Today, most furniture is cheap and mass produced. Much of it has to be assembled, because of this, the craft of cabinet making is not as appreciated as it might be.

Cabinet makers need to have business acumen as well as crafting skills. They need to be able to purchase the items they cannot make themselves, such as metal knobs and hardware. Jobs may range in size from replacing a single drawer to building an entire kitchen. Kitchen and bathroom remodeling are also sometimes available, with doors and hardware being replaced or refinished. Cabinet makers may also do other woodworking and remodeling jobs.

Most work falls between a single piece of furniture and an entire room. Carpenters may create a desk for a home office or build bookcases into the wall. Furniture tends to be custom made and workers need to coordinate with customers and interior designers to create the needed wood project. Cherry and oak are the most common woods for fine furniture and doors, but workers may also handle cheaper materials like pine. For some items, such as a kitchen islands or a bathroom vanity, waterproofing is essential. Furniture intended and designed for garages has to resist nicks and dings. Corner cupboards are often particularly challenging. A lot of furniture is intended for storage purposes, and many pieces are fairly large, such as beds. Small items are, however, also important, such as curio cabinets or pet beds. Some cabinet makers may even make dollhouse furniture.

Needless to say, flexibility is essential, as is the ability to make all different kinds of furniture. Quality woodwork is key, because customers will pay a premium for handcrafted and handmade items. The demand for handcrafted woodworking projects might be low, however you can't deny the superior quality and time dedicated to creating these pieces.
