Horse Carriage Terms
If you are planning a wedding celebration or an evening of sight seeing and romance, then a horse drawn carriage might be the ultimate in elegant transportation. If you plan to hire a horse drawn carriage and driver, then there are a few terms you might want to remember before you make your selection:

Stagecoach: A covered wagon used for the transportation of people and goods across long distances. Stagecoaches are typically drawn by four horses. Widely used in Europe and the United States for the carrying and delivery of mail.

Buggy: A one or two seated horse drawn conveyance. Buggies are very light and can be drawn by one or two horses for relatively short trips. Buggies do not have driver's boxes. They are often used by the Amish.

Wagonette: A multi-passenger horse drawn wagon. Also known as an omnibus.

Chariot: A one or two horse drawn vehicle with four wheels. The cab features two passenger seats and a coach box for the driver. Typically used in elaborate ceremonial occasions.

Coach: A closed conveyance capable of carrying two or more passengers, not including the driver who typically has a built in compartment or box. Whereas a stagecoach is utilitarian, a coach is often used for highly ceremonial occasions, and are often gilded and feature drivers in full livery.

Barouche: An elegant, four wheeled conveyance with a soft, retractable hood typically used in summer. They are capable of carrying four passengers in seats facing each other. A barouche is drawn by a pair of horses.

Chaise: A very light two wheeled conveyance suitable for driving a maximum of two people. A chaise is drawn by one horse.

Companies that rent horse drawn carriages can have a wide range of clients. If the company has a selection of vehicles such as sleighs, carts, wagons, and hearses, then they could serve every occasion from weddings to funerals. In order to offer this level of service to so many different types of clients, the horse drawn transportation companies need customer service representatives who can supply accurate information about different types of options.

Representatives working for a horse buggy and carriage ride company will usually encounter customers who are excited about an upcoming wedding or date. They may make romantic requests, such as placing roses in the carriage, in order to create a true fairy tale ambiance. Those same representatives, however, could also speak with customers who are going through emotionally trying times. These people may need to hire horse drawn hearses for funerals. The rep needs to have the ability to conform to different forms of communication and remain sensitive to the customer's present feelings.

Equine vehicle companies also need to employ a crew of repair professionals who can fix new and antique horse drawn coaches, limousines, sleighs, carts, and wagons. Few people have experience working with these vehicles, so companies will often need to hire artisans who have completed apprenticeships with horse drawn vehicle manufacturers. They will also need to know about harnesses, saddles, and other accessories that are used during horse rides. Hiring an experienced professional will help ensure that the vehicles do not break down during a wedding, funeral, or romantic buggy ride in the park.
