Abortion Alternatives Organizations
Organizations which offer abortion alternatives to pregnant women may do so for several different and divergent reasons. Firstly, an organization might offer aid to a pregnant woman extending beyond a termination of the pregnancy based on a conception of the broad range of women's rights. Secondly, certain groups might offer abortion alternatives explicitly and concertedly toward the end of furthering a "pro-life" agenda. Thirdly, groups might offer both abortion and alternative choices similarly within the constraints set by legal controls or funding requirements.
Both the particular alternatives to abortion offered and the way in which they are made available can depend on an organization's institutional basis and governing philosophy. The "pro-life" opponents to abortion are often, though not necessarily, associated with adherence to religion. One common tack taken by such groups is to urge any pregnant woman or girl considering outright termination of the pregnancy to instead give up her baby for adoption.
Issues of contention have been raised in relation to such organizations. Some critics argue that the rights of an unborn baby should not be raised above those of the mother. Other opponents of such groups take the less controversial stance that some family planning or birth control plan should be incorporated into any meaningful program.
Due to the fear of taxpayer censure, a government agency may not overtly counsel expectant mothers to take the abortion route. Nonetheless, health clinics typically seek to preserve a degree of choice for women as a supportive step. Non-profit organizations may experience fewer constraints, particularly when independently financed. Regardless of circumstances, however, the counseling of teenagers or children on abortion-related issues will typically be subject to increased legal oversight. At the very least, information on such options can be sought out through the internet.
