Questions to Ask Psychologists

Psychologists are professional therapists that address mental health disorders that impact the lives of their clients. There are many different types of mental health professionals that use various counseling techniques, so you will need to know what questions you can use to decide which option will work best for you or your loved on.

  • What types of mental health issues have you treated in the past?
Some of the psychologists might have experience with family psychology that helps them offer counseling services that focus on the relationships between children and adults. Others might focus on individual counseling for issues such as depression, anger management, anxiety disorders, and mental development.

  • Do you work in a clinic that allows you to access the services of psychiatrists and other types of counselors?
Someone with a PhD in psychology might know how to use reliable therapy techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy. They do not, however, have the experience or certification to prescribe drugs. Many patients find that it is helpful to choose a therapist that has access to psychiatrists through a mutual clinic. That way, they can get medication to help their patients overcome mental health disorders.

  • Are you certified to offering counseling services?
You always want to find someone that has been certified by a regulatory organization. A social worker, church therapist, or other types of counselor could have the right certifications to treat your disorder.

  • How much do you charge?
You need to find an option that is affordable to you. Otherwise, you will not be able to pay for long-term counseling.

Students who want to become psychologists should attend a four year college to obtain a bachelor’s degree in psychology. They can spend a few more years in college working towards their PhD, followed by a research dissertation. They can then secure a position within the teaching, counseling, or research fields. At some point in their education, students must declare a specialty, such as forensics, or sports psychology.

Good skills to have as a psychologist include a gentle demeanor, easy rapport with others, ability to listen well and communicate easily. They must provide confidential advice and support, providing referrals to psychiatrists as needed. Psychiatrists are medical doctors, therefore able to prescribe medication to treat a variety of mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders.

Psychological services include outpatient care, referrals, counseling support, and therapy. When visiting a psychologist’s office, you will first encounter a receptionist who can provide you with all the basic information you need, such as health insurance acceptance, scheduling, availability, and rates. Some psychologists offer free initial consultations. Mental health professionals that work within clinics see patients on a rotating basis throughout the day. Patients may be there as part of a mental health emergency, such as suicidal tendencies.

Other times, psychologists and therapists are located within schools to meet with children on a regular basis and give advice pertaining to important issues. Such issues may involve anger management, family issues, and couple's relationship problems. Therapists have expertise in therapy of behavioral, cognitive, and other mental health areas, providing confidential services to patients of all ages. Some specialize in just one age group, such as providing solutions to teens. They are licensed professionals who can help alleviate developmental, social anxiety, and clinical depression disorders in patients.
