Surgical Centers

Surgical centers operate in a number of specialties. In most cases they work under the supervision of a physician or doctor who is skilled in a specific area. For example, a surgical center may specialize in oral surgery or in ear, nose and throat procedures.

They may or may not be associated with a larger hospital, and generally work in tandem with doctor offices and health centers. Surgical centers hire nurses and anesthesiologists as well as an office staff. Some do only outpatient and ambulatory surgery and may not have ward staff. Others handle more complex procedures and keep at least some patients overnight or longer. The smallest clinics may only perform procedures that can be done under local anesthetic and do not hire anesthesiologists.

The size of the facility affects the staffing levels, as does whether they handle complex, intermediate or standard procedures. Surgical centers generally do not handle emergency surgeries. Those that also handle some rehabilitation services may hire therapists in those areas. Surgical centers need to network with other medical professionals, including physicians and hospitals that might be able to assist when complications occur. All staff members have to know what to do in the case of an emergency.

As many centers only offer minor procedures that can be handled in an outpatient and ambulatory manner. There is a certain importance placed on the receptionist and office staff, who may have to care for and assist both patients and accompanying relatives.

Surgical centers also have to deal with health insurance companies and handle their own liability insurance. The latter is a cost often passed on to patients and their insurers. However, procedures done in a surgical center are generally cheaper than going to a hospital.

Surgical centers are an important and essential part of the health care industry.

When wondering how to choose the right surgical center or medical clinic for you, check out each facility's background, whether you need ambulatory services, surgery, emergency care, procedures, health care, minor and major injuries, operations, intermediate care, urologic care, ophthalmologic services, and ear, nose, and throat services. Find out if the doctors, associates, and professionals are properly licensed and have reputable backgrounds. You can go online to research the backgrounds of a few different local surgical centers. It may be a wise choice to find a surgical center or hospital near you, rather than far away so you can get to it quickly and easily in the event of an emergency. Once you have decided what kind of medical clinic or surgical center you want, whether private clinic, community-owned hospital, or office-based facility, be sure to visit with a few before committing. Assess the appearance of the office, making sure the building is well maintained and clean. Meet with several staff members and make note if they are timely and well groomed. Make sure the facility and office is clean as well, and staff members are courteous. Ask about costs of various services, whether you need general healthcare, emergency services, ambulatory services, or minor outpatient procedures. You want to choose a surgical center you feel comfortable with, but you also want to feel comfortable and natural with other staff members such as nurses too. Inquire about costs and services at each clinic you visit. It's important to make sure the center takes your health care insurance. Get doctor's office referrals if possible from your physician. Before choosing a surgery center, keep in mind the hours, services, location, availability, specialty, background, and level of professionalism.
