Questions to Ask A Travel Agent

If you are going to consult with a travel agent for the first time, it is best to write down a list of questions before heading out to the agency. Travel agents can help you to get great deals on group trips, airline tickets, hotels, car rentals, and more in many popular tourist destinations.

  • Is travel insurance available on the package I am considering?
Travel insurance can help you to get some or all of your money back if your vacation or corporate trip needs to be cancelled because of bad weather, health problems, or a family emergency.

  • Do I need to bring a passport?
This is an important question to ask at the agency especially if you are going on a cruise. Even though a cruise may leave from the United States, you will need to bring a passport to get off of the ship at most ports to do activities or take adventures.

  • What tours are available in the country I am traveling to?
Booking a tour through a travel agent can help you to avoid scams when traveling around the world. Travel agencies have relationships with legitimate tour operators that offer fair prices.

  • Which city do you recommend flying into?
If you are traveling to a remote honeymoon destination, there may not be an airport in the exact spot. An agent can recommend the the nearest city to land in and arrange a plan for you to get a ride to your hostel, hotel, or luxury resort.

  • Do you have any membership clubs?
Some agencies may have a frequent travel club that you can join for free to earn extra vacation perks.

  • Can trips be managed online?
Many agencies are creating web portals so that you can log in and view your trip details on the Internet.

If you like to travel, consider a career as a travel agent. In this position, you will work with both tourists and corporate travelers to make vacation plans.

On a daily basis, you could find yourself booking a tour of any city in the world for your client. You will help them get club rates on hotels and airlines. If they need to rent a car, you can get them the best price. You can also help them get group packages on cruises and activities if they are traveling with a lot of people.

Whether your client wants a luxury trip or an adventure staying in hostels, you will have the resources to help them. Each day, you will consult with them to plan the vacation they deserve. Your clients may want to visit every city and country around the world, so you need to be ready to meet their individual needs. You should treat each client like they are members of an exclusive club.

While you don’t need formal schooling to become a travel agent, you will need to get training when you join an agency. The agency will teach you how to get great rates on tickets for tours. They will also teach you how to book reservations online and over the phone. Of course, you should have a deep passion for geography and travel, and you should be sensitive to the needs of your clients. If you are helping them with their honeymoon, for example, you are planning one of the most memorable trips they will take.

No matter who your clients are, you will be able to serve as their trip operator, delivering them a memorable and lasting experience. Being a travel agent can be a very lucrative and rewarding career.
