Plastering Contractor Terminology
The following are some terms that may be used by a plastering contractor.

Admixtures: Admixtures are substances that are added to plaster, stucco, cement, and other construction materials. Admixtures alter the composition of the material. They can add color to the mixture, or they can increase or decrease the mixture's drying time.

Blueboard: Blueboard is Sheetrock that has been enclosed in a special paper. This paper is able to bond chemically with plaster, stucco, and other building materials.

Caster: Casters are skilled craftsmen that can shape plaster, stucco, and other building materials into elaborate ornamental features. These skilled contractors use molds to produce a particular design or figure.

Gypsum: Gypsum is a white or gray mineral. Since gypsum resists heat well, it is often used in building construction. Gypsum is used to make various building materials, such as Sheetrock and plaster of Paris.

Nail Pops: Nail pops occur when the wood used in building construction has not been cured properly or shrinks after construction. The plaster, stucco, or other building material pops off of the nail, leaving it exposed.

Sheetrock: Sheetrock is plasterboard or gypsum board, better known as drywall, that has been covered with paper. Sheetrock is inexpensive and, because it is usually made from gypsum, resists heat well. This popular construction material is commonly used for ceilings and interior walls, and the paper covering it bonds well with plaster, stucco, and similar construction materials.

Stucco: Stucco is traditionally made from lime, sand, and water, but Portland cement often replaces the lime in modern stucco mixes. While stucco is most commonly used on the exterior of structures, it can be used on interior walls or for ornamental moldings.

Venetian Plaster: Venetian plaster is a construction material that is similar to stucco. Venetian plaster has a glossier finish than stucco.

Different plastering contractors often offer the same types of services, but they may vary by specialty and skills. Some have masonry or carpentry backgrounds, while others have general handyman skills. Electricians, tile contractors, roofers, and siding contractors often all work together on building and construction projects with plastering contractors. Whether for residential, commercial, or industrial purposes, plastering contractors often boast many years of experience. They may or may not have a bachelor's degree, but on-the-job training over a number of years is most important in learning the trade.

Many plastering contractors and consultants belong to a state building association, similar to those for masons. Contractors should be licensed and certified. They may provide many services for clients, such as drywall, stucco, general carpentry, home improvements, and restorations. Additional services may involve renovations, layering, ornamental plaster, veneers, and installation.

Clients may deal solely with the contractors, or they may encounter several other professionals within the business as well, such as receptionists and company reps. Secretaries can schedule appointments and offer free estimates and consultations for home improvement projects. The contractors themselves can assess the projects and provide a price quote for budgeting and planning purposes.

Related professions include contractors focusing on tile and ceramic, painting, pavement, basement, acoustical, brick paving, masonry, plaster repair, or concrete. Sometimes drywall needs to be replaced due to water damage. Other times, decorative plastering is called for in a brand new home. Whether clients need to renovate or fix an existing house or building, or whether new construction demands brand new drywall and plaster applications, a plastering contracting company can help.
