Dock Builders

Dock builders have usually been in the construction business for many years, gathering experience on all types of lake, sea, and river docks. They may also build wharf and jetty structures as well. They often work solely in the marine industry, although they may build on land as well.

Many dock builders are also engineers, who work with architects on a regular basis to come up with sound plans for incorporating a dock within a marina. They may work with wholesaler lumber dealers as well, to get the necessary materials, equipment, tools, and accessories like bumpers they need for a job.

Although no higher education is necessarily needed in this field, it is a plus to have a specialty and a degree. Necessary skills to possess as a builder include good coordination and logistics skills, excellent communication among members of the team, time management skills, and good business sense.

Many dock builders and contractors give out estimates and quotes on particular projects to give the customer a sense of the scope and cost. Many of these estimates are free, as an added bonus to the potential client.

In this business, it helps to have a specialty. While many dock builders use wooden boards and pilings to construct docks, others specialize in aluminum docks. Docks can be simple floating structures that jut out into the water, or provide moorings for boats in a lake marina. Others can be elaborate, featuring reinforced concrete decking, custom boat lifts, water slides, ladders, and gates.

Construction contractors who build docks should have a keen eye for detail, the proper certification and licensing, and an ability to bring a project full circle within a specified time frame.

To find local dock builders, you can drive around a harbor and see if any of the workers have recommendations for you. Local waterfront yards that have a pier for a boat may have owners that can help you find a company that has experienced contractors and fair prices. If you want to build a harbor for loading cargo, you will want to make sure that the boats will have enough room to enter from the bay. Once you have found a company that you're interested in employing, you will want go over what type of construction you want to do. If it involves a port, jetty, quay, wharf or dry dock it may fluctuate the quote you're given. You can let them know how large your ski boat, pontoon, or ferry is so they will come back with a more accurate estimate. Marinas will often have supplies stores for boat owners that may be able to recommend dock builders in the area. There you can also buy anything you may need, such as a slip or safety vest. Construction of a port will take some time. Therefore if you have a deadline for an upcoming event you want to make you will want the contractors to have plenty of time to complete the construction process. A tight deadline might also increase the price. Get a few quotes from different companies to see who works with better materials yet gives a fair price on the task you want done. Just because the contractor has a higher price does not always mean they're the best pick.
