Designers

Designers generally take college level courses in the specific kind of design they are interested in.

Fashion designers commonly take courses in community colleges intended to teach them the physical and artistic skills necessary. The same colleges commonly teach courses in interior design and theater courses in costume and lighting. Jewelry design courses are also often separate. Fashion designers may specialize further, in women's or men's clothing or in suits or jeans.

Architects generally have architecture degrees and spend quite a few years in school. Designing buildings is a complicated business. Landscape designers need to know about plants and climate. Both may work at the scenic level, and often together when a new building is being devised.

Some designers may also take courses in engineering, especially if they plan on working in industrial or automotive design. Video game designers need to know computer code and how computer systems work.

Web designers need training in graphic arts as well as in HTML, and other languages used on the web.

Designers need to be able to interact with clients, engineers and other contractors. As most of them work as contractors, they need basic business skills and financial management capabilities. They need to be able to visualize how a design will look in action. Interactions are important, both between people and designs.

Designers are creators, and they need to know a little bit about copyright and trademark law. Design firms may keep lawyers on retainer. As creators, they devise the idea of the building or practical item, but they need to have enough engineering to know if their plans will work.

Most designers work independently and creatively, but they are also part of a wider system.

You will find that there are many different firms or contractors available that are creators of different products. Fashion designers for clothing and accessories, such as jeans and jewelry, are much different than creators of computer systems and graphics. Those that have a high level of visual creativity will often become an architect or engineer to device new and innovative industrial, automotive, landscape, or costume designs. Like a drug, people can become hooked on creative arts. Buildings can be built in various architectural styles that match the scenic view that surrounds the structure. Fashion is constantly changing by those that devise clothing styles to math the season and society's current preferences. Web and video games will often have superior graphics and interaction that is developed by engineers who build the game from start to finish. Action games are enjoyed by both children and adults because of the life-like graphics and interactions that can take place between players. On the other hand, architects will use different styles to format the interior of a home to find the best places for lighting and windows to make the home match the owner's personal lifestyle. General contractors may be able to devise various types of designs in different art communities, whether it's for creating jewelry or frames of an automobile. The internet and phone book will list various firms that will provide their services to you. Calling them in advance to ask what their credentials are and the rates they charge can help you decide who you would prefer to hire and work with.
